Reps discussed on gen forum...almost balanced opinion!
Nanuq replied to cougar1's topic in General Discussion
IMHO there are people who calculate their "worth" by what they own. Their possessions define them. That's a pretty slippery slope to live on. Any thing can be taken from you. And then where will you be? We need to develop "who" we are by "what we do". And remember that our "stuff" is just .... stuff. -
If it was using a Land Rover battery you'd know it... there would be oil leaking from it. Hey Mike, -80F is nothing. Accounting for wind chill, I used to work outside at temps waaaay below that. The coldest was estimated at -135F because the wind chill charts don't go that low.
-
The "official" reading at Jim River almost hit -80F but the battery in the weather station apparently died. http://wattsupwiththat.com/2012/01/30/bitter-cold-records-broken-in-alaska-all-time-coldest-record-nearly-broken-but-murphys-law-intervenes/ So how do they explain this reading taken last winter?

It's sad when controversies like this come along. I didn't lock this down because our members are big boys and can handle themselves. Pho, stick around. Hear me? I won't let some newbie come in here and act like that, then close the thread and let him think he won some kind of victory. Far from it, as our honorable gents have demonstrated by encouraging each other in the end. Other fora would have locked and banned right away but that's not how we roll here. So troublemakers... it won't work here. We don't post rules to ignore them or dance around parsing syllables. We are grown-ups and act like it. We support each other. This is the best watch forum on the Web because it has the strongest members. It's far deeper than just a love of watches. Good job, boys. You made me proud today. Now I'm going to go ban some people, at their own request.

They used to issue Chippewa and Pendleton wool shirts to the Rangers in the National Park Service decades ago, and put special brass Nat'l Park Service buttons on them. My grandfather's favorite shirt was worn to tatters and unusable when I got it, so I salvaged the unique bottons from it and put them on my favorite Pendleton shirt. I saved the part that was meaningful. Some day when I'm dead and gone my kids will agonize over what stuff of mine is meaningful. At first they'll keep everything, then common sense will prevail and they'll chuck the pedestrian junk and keep a few treasured items. I bet you could whack that ammo pouch into a strap that your kids will treasure some day. If you left them the actual pouch..... not so much.

Pfffffffft!! What you need is magnesium-aluminum alloy ... then when it's 49 years old it will look as good as this. Just kidding, of course.

Nanuq replied to the_rymeister's topic in The Omega Area
Get the watch warm (set it in a sunny window) and get the crystal cold. Then press the crystal in place with your thumbs, then put a hockey puck on the crystal, set it on the floor, and step on it. Easy squeasy. -
The lettering is not quite right either... the fonts are correct but poorly done. I'm thinking repaint.

Agreed. See the tiny serifs at the corners of the 6:00 and 9:00 markers? And the distinctive sharp points on the 12:00 triangle? Compare them to the original photos. Definitely redone.

Yep, hybrid all the way. It's embarrassing how much time I spent looking at Snowflake hands online to come up with the right blend. You're getting some winter weather? Nice! It's been a wild winter here, five storms with 100-120mph winds, PILES and PILES of snow, humongous drifts, and now nasty cold for the last month. Raahhhrrrrrrr!!!! Put on the Ride of the Valkyries and let's go!

E, for a Snowflake there are some exact measurements for them to be right. Yes, unfortunately, I've spent a LOT of time looking at them. The tip of the hours hand just touches the 6 and 9 markers. It's a small tip that extends past the diamond, unlike Yuki's long tip. The width of the tip should appear narrower than the width of its shaft. The minutes hand just extends to the back end of those markers and its body is slightly narrower than the hours hand. The diamond of the seconds hand is bisected at its widest point by the outer edge of the 6 and 9 markers. It also has a long tail on its opposite end. Checking the 'bay here are some that look pretty good, though I wish the minutes hand shaft was slightly narrower: item #170700711490 Here are mine:

Acrylic Crystals on your Vintage Rep .. Long Term strategy ?
Nanuq replied to OldCorvette's topic in The Rolex Area
There are wads of variety in acrylic crystals and many ways (some accurate) to attach them. When yours fails, measure up its inner and outer diameters and check GS or Sternkreuz catalogs, or Clark on eBay. You'll find a replacement pretty easily. You might need to gin up an attachment method; in that case JMB is the guy to talk to. -
This is fine pre-purchase. For post-purchase empirical analysis, I believe one can make the observation that WD ~ k•(1/[Mp]) where WD is watch diameter, k is a constant and Mp is phallic mass.

SM, that's a great idea! Thanks for the explanation.

Depends if they live in NJ and have associates named Guido. Getting back to the surface with those concrete boots is the problem.
