Rolex experts wanted - Whats wrong with my date font?
stilty replied to perry563's topic in The Rolex Area
I don't know if it is the date mag or date overlay that causes the 3X problem. Probably a combination of the two. The cubic works is nice, but still not correct. The font size is too big. I think they do this on purpose to compensate for the weak date mag. Weak mag + large font = decent replicated look. Here is a scan of a gen 3135 datedisc and the cubicworks date overlay side by side. The gen font is a lot smaller than the overlay and also a lot more bold. If you are using the cubicworks in gen cases, your date mag will be too big compared to a gen. Genuine 3135 on left - Cubicworks overlay on right. Both scanned at the same time, side by side for comparison. -
all the ones I have seen do not hack, and according to the tech sheet, it was not built to hack.

Why replace a stock MBW DRSD movement with a "slow beat" movement?
stilty replied to earnout's topic in The Rolex Area
The 1570 hacks. In the photo below, I believe, is the lever that is responsible for the 'hack' when the stem is pulled out. I think it was the 1560 that did not hack, and possibly a few of the early 1570. Experts, please chime in. -
Wow, that Jeter comment is uncalled for. Whether you are a Sox fan or Yankees fan, what Jeter has done for the game is NOT pussy. Some of the plays he has made over the course of his career is amazing. (all with the same team I might add) Posada was probably the most consistent batter this past season and is clutch. Veritek is a has been. Ortiz is class... I love that guy, but for the rest... big deal... Manny should cut that sh*t off his head. That is just plain disgusting! I can't imagine how it smells. Congrats to the Sox for winning, but I sure wish they didn't as we now have to deal with the obnoxious 'nation'. At least with Yankees fans, they do it with style, and in true New York style. Whether they win or lose, they are all still the same. I haven't been to Fenway, don't know if I could deal with the crowd, but been to Yankee stadium numerous times and it is awesome! The first MLB game I saw was the Yankees vs Mariners way back in '77 in the old Kingdome Billy Martin, Reggie Jackson, Craig Nettles, Willie Randolf. And Rupert Jones for the M's. I still have my ticket stub. Christ, ball games back then only cost $1.50.

The older style crowns are thicker. They are both 6mm, but the new style is made to fit the 5.3mm case tube. Jimmythree on TRC is well schooled in which crown is which and the part numbers needed. For the 16200 case, you will need a 24-603-0 crown. It is 6mm, but it is thinner. The old style crown will not fit in the newer cases, they will only fit in the 160XX case. You will need a new style crown, and by the looks of it, now a new case tube. The case tube for the 16200 is part number 24-5320. Since it is filed out, there is a good chance it will break apart and will definately not be waterproof. just remember: old style = thicker stem new style = thinner stem

could you post a picture? -
fun times! I'm guessing you filed out the case tube as you were installing the old style crown?

Well, I'm dual as well. I was talking with my US uncle, who I love dearly. In Canada, we celebrate in October, so I told him it is earlier than in the US. I also told him we celebrate Canada Day on July 1st as opposed to the US holiday on July 4th. He then asks, "What day do you celebrate Christmas in Canada?" and "Is your New Years on January 1st?" I just nodded and bit my tongue. I also remember one time I was going to a club in Seattle with a couple buddies and I was asked for ID at the door. My ID said British Columbia. The doorman said, "You're a long way from home, how's the Queen and England?" I guess he figured the province of British Columbia is NOT part of Canada, and is actually across the pond in the UK! I didn't correct him, just smiled and nodded. I wanted to make sure I got in the club.

congrats to the Sox. But man, that series could not keep my attention! The only full game I watched was game one, after that, I found myself switching the channel, going into my office to tinker on some watch parts, then coming back to check on the game. Lame, lame, lame! Good for sox fans, but bad for baseball. That was one lame series.

Why replace a stock MBW DRSD movement with a "slow beat" movement?
stilty replied to earnout's topic in The Rolex Area
I'm guessing the reason that The Zigmeister is saying it can't be done is your case was machined for the 2824-2 movement. This movement is thinner than the 2846. It is the main plate that is thicker and prevents the stem from lining up with the tube. There is only one option for you. You will basically have to get The Zigmeister to swap the main plates on the movements. You will then end up with a slow beat 2824-2 and a high beat 2846. This will solve your problem. And while he is add it, he can leave the balance stop lever intact so you will have a hacking slow beat 2824-2! Or, the other option if you don't have a 2846 to sacrifice, is you could just get The Zigmeister to order you a complete balance for a 2846 and drop it in the 2824-2. You will just have to make sure the shock assembly and balance c ock match, as well as a few other parts may need to be compared. Not a cheap option as you are probably looking at the cost of the 2846, plus the cost of labour on the teardown and rebuild of two movements. Or if you are lucky, just a straight swap on the complete balance. That will only cost you about $30 for the parts, plus The Zigmeister's labour. -

Yes, all the 28XX calibres have the same dial feet position. -
Wow, I wonder what it would be like if we were able to rewind time for 30+ years, go back to when Rolex first introduced the red sub or DRSD? Would everyone be so up in arms about that change too? Or when the original milgauss was introduced? That must have really make some folks shake their head in disbelief. My local AD said the waiting list for this watch is longer than the SS daytona. Even the Yachty II has a long waiting list. To me, the YMII is an ugly watch, but I will defend it as it is an engineering marvel! Rolex designed a great movement in that timepiece. It is actually now a yachting watch and can be used as such, whereas the previous version did what? Nothing.

I would have to say an overlay would be next to impossible. The date disc and day disc are pretty much flush and if you were to attach a date overlay, the day overlay would rub against it.

The bracelet is wrong for II. Fliplock is only available for the newest Explorer I's. And for further reference... A Franken-King from a few years back. Gen no holes case, gen bezel, gen crystal, gen dial, gen crown, aftermarket hands and bracelet. ETA powered. Stay tuned! I will soon unveil a new Air-King project that has been sitting in the parts drawer!

Found this while browsing with my morning coffee. I like the look of the 40mm case with smooth bezel. The wrist shots look great! Would love to get the gen with green sapphire. Ahhhhhhh. Although the purists out there don't really seem to like it. CLICK to see pics of New Milgauss

I'm curious how ETA solved this problem with their 2892-2 / 2893-2 line of movements? When manually winding those, you can barely hear it wind, and they wind with no effort and are extremely smooth. My 2893-2 seemed even smoother than Rolex. I couldn't even tell without holding to my ear that it was winding. I thought something was wrong with the movement when I first got it as the crown wound so effortlessly, I thought it may be been broken. -
I would love to build a franken with a gen movement myself, but I have yet to see one end for less than $1500. Add in the cost of the parts and you might as well just buy a used watch. Those movements are not a bargain, and who knows how much you are going to spend on an overhaul and replacement parts. There is a reason they are for sale. And yes alt.watch, I've looked into having some spacers made, a one off will cost me between $150 - $200, and after that, it is just the cost of the machining at $75/hour. He figures it will take about 20 minutes per spacer depending how I want it finished, etc, He said he could finish them anyway I want, in brass, nickel, stainless, copper, pearlage finish, etc, and custom engraving. They will be very nice, but not cheap. I've thought about getting them made for 2824-2, but it is cheaper to just buy the enlargment rings for a 2834-2 from julesborel. They are only $12. He is away until the first week of November. He wants me to send him the case, dial, and movement so he can make them exact. Here is the problem I face. He is a master watchmaker, and also an authorized Rolex service agent. Once he figures out what I am up to, I am pretty positive he will scold me and turn me away. I'm thinking I may just send the midcase minus crystal and bezel, a Mark II dial, and the movement, and maybe a unbranded crown and see if he says anything. I'm almost thinking of buffing out the case marking between the lugs, but I'm still sure he will know the case as soon as he sees it. Oh well, it may not happen especially since no one has expressed any interest if I do get some made.

The One And Only Ziggified Honpo 7753 187
stilty replied to Watchmeister's topic in The Panerai Area
First off, nice timepeice! Wear it in good health! And The Zigmeister, just thinking out loud, and only you would know as I've never looked at one of those movements, but is it possible to replace the date disc to bring it closer to the dial? The 2824-2 and 2892-2 are flat date discs, but you can interchange a date disc from a 2834-2,2836-2, or 2846 which are raised. Is there a raised date disc that can be swapped? If there is, that would probably solve the problem. Or perhaps a date disc overlay could be fixed to raise it closer to the dial? -
Such a tragedy. Sorry to hear of your loss. I lost my mother in a car accident five years ago. My parents were on their way to my sisters for Thanksgiving Dinner. Time is the only healer. Your friend will be with you in your memories and your dreams. Stay stong.

Hi Beever, Thanks for the feedback. They do look beautiful, but if they don't work, that is not going to cut it. Cheers!

Interesting. So if a person was lucky enough to have RSC install a new flat 3 date disc during an overhaul, would the printing be fuzzy or crisp as the new date discs? I've read that every once in a while, and depending on what RSC the watch is sent to, there is the odd flat 3 disc kicking around.

Just wondering if anyone has purchased one of the Official Time watch winders that are on eBay? I'm interested in the Van Gogh series. A bit more expensive than others I've seen, but I do like the style. Nice and clean looking. But man, just a tad pricey and I'm wondering if they are worth it. Anyone buy one?
