I am, but was visiting T.O.'s "jewellery district" (it's nothing like 47th st!), and this fellow had this model for sale.. Was thinking it could tie me over until I find the right pre-moon. I just had him open it up to check the serial and it's 4824xxx, which I presume puts it around 1985.
I just walked away.
A gen birth year vintage watch is more than about the price. An unpolished original case beats a nicely repolished case anyday.. a mediocre polished case is something that will not be a keeper. Plus I've seen the listing on VRF.
Plus he just asked for input. I stand behind my comments on the bevels regardless of price. It could be better.
It is an interesting dial, but my (un) biased opinion is that the bevels could have been cut better. I could honestly do better.
I would pass and be patient, even if it takes some time. It's your birth year watch. There should be no reservations. You have to absolutely love every aspect of the watch and jump in when you find the right one.
As long as there is full disclosure and the condition of the watch as a whole, or parts used in the build are not mis-represented, then a seller should be free to ask any sum he wants.
I wouldn't know where the cost of a build's inflection point goes from "reasonably" priced to "unreasonable".
