  2. I fail to see how spending $3500 on a $4k watch make any sense, given the fact that the case might still be rep....Which is why I would never do a "uber-franken" 16610 sub build unless a whack of cheap gen parts just fell in my lap. However, spending $7k on a 6538 big crown sub build can be justified since that is only 1/10 the cost of a genuine equivalent. But, this is a hobby, and most hobbies just don't make economic sense. How many vintage car builds do you see at Barrett-Jackson where the cost to build the "resto-mod" is significantly higher than the sale price? Happens all the time. Part of the fun is in the building and part-hunting process whether its a budget build using a cartel case or a complete genenstein. I personally enjoy the fact that I have to contact several vintage parts dealers, or scour ebay daily looking for the perfect part. I think if there was a super watch parts supermarket where I could find every part I ever wanted, the fun of this hobby would be lost. It would just be too easy. As for cost breakdown, i think that's somewhat irrelevant.. how would you price a rare insert you might have had in a drawer for 20 years? at cost or current market value? If the latter, how is that determined? I think for any build, only a complete list of parts (gen and rep) are required along with the services/mods performed to the case or any other part. Then it's up to the buyer to do their homework and evaluate if the asking price is fair or not.
  3. Nice.. but are you sure that's a gen MKI 666 dial?
  4. I only have an interest if there is a gen movement involved. I have a sea of ETA movements that are cluttering up my parts bin. The rotor of a 50 year old cal 1520 movement is buttery smooth compared to noisy 2836/2824's. Plus gen parts just plain fit. If you've ever worked with a modified 2836 GMT you will know what I mean. So only all gen or high-end franken/genensteins for me.
  5. Excellent... If i might suggest, you could try to angle the base of the top of the CG's a bit more. right now the shape of the top is an isosocles triangle.. whereas a PCG should be a little more scalene. Here's a gen PCG 5512 case I almost bought recently... note how the top of the case as it approaches the CG is a trapezoidal shape, and the top of the CG is a scalene triangle:
  6. I believe the J12 insert is the same as the noob.... a non-ceramic insert would look silly and wont fit the bezel properly IMO.

  10. Ahh the ever elusive Australian destro version of the red-depth 6538. Very cool pic!
  11. I suppose so. Still need to find the right dial. Missed one at the Knightsbridge auction last week. Will keep looking.
  12. One more piece of the puzzle has arrived. cal 1575:

  14. The left side of the case is over polished. Too much material was removed at the mid section
  15. Nice macro skillz! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  21. The HR as a complete package is a great turn key solution. But if I were to build a budge BC, I'd use the Silix instead. The HR bezel construction is just too limiting.
  22. well, I hate to say it, buy the winner so far is the 57 Speedmaster. Straight lugs, no CG's, ceramic dial, broad arrow hour hand, all SS bezel. I'm not 100% sold on the fake patina, but it's growing on me.
