Another view to take is that with the A7750's, a slow beat can be replaced with a gen high beat as a straight swap as the hand sizes are the same, while a high beat if serviced properly shouldn't (take this with a degree of variance in consideration) need parts replaced...just maintenance on a regular cycle as you're getting things lubed up before the metal runs dry as metal on metal.

As an interesting update, I was reading an architectural review of a house down the street from me and it reminded me of the funny lines that people draw on when things like reps or "fakes" are acceptable or not to be displayed in public. In the article, the owner of a rather stunningly designed modernist house in an extremely nice part of a moderately large cosmopolitan city (more than others, not as much as some ) had in his house replica Le Corbusier chairs that looked fantastic to the overall look of the house. We see this countless times. How many houses have Arts and Crafts furniture using the designs of Stickley and others, or Tiffany inspired lamps, or even prints and posters decorating hallways and walls and people don't think twice about looking down on them for having replicas proudly displayed and used in daily life? Lighthing fixtures found in most people's houses are often cheaper copies of well known designs (or at least heavily "homaged" designs. Have you ever seen a non-Herman Miller Aeron chair in an office anywhere? It just so happens that a lot of these products don't have brand labels emblazoned on them so are by nature "sterile", but a print is a reproduction, unless you bought the original work of art, or vintage poster or what not. It's something to consider before calling people out for being "wannabe's", posers, or whatever. Everyday life is filled with hypocries...accept it and enjoy whatever decisions you make. Don't take things too seriously...you'll give yourself a heart attack.

Agreed. The only people who have paid attention to any of my watches at all are either people interested in watches, and that has opened up some interesting discussion and introduction to the world of reps and watches in general...or are designers who notice details like that. I actually think it would be fun to get an extremely out-of-range rep so obviously fake because likely nobody would notice it anyways, and if they did it would be kind of a joke and cause a good chuckle (like a PP Sky Moon or uber-blinged out HBB. Vintage Rollies don't work as well for this because nobody but collectors understand the vintage market or really know what they are worth.

...and besides, you gotta wear them for at least a little bit to know whether or not your first attempts at horology, mods, repairs, etc are completely botched, or if all your swearing, sweating, and squinting through a loupe and begging for help from mates at RWG were worth it, bringing beautiful things into your life for you and your loved ones, bringing your family closer together, giving you the motivation to change the world...well maybe that's gone too far. I also wear them in public as my 4 year old son likes to pick the watches I wear as part of the morning routine. If you really wanted to, you could get into the whole morality of a variety of industries...not just reps. Car industry - is it better to make a platform/chassis safer, or does actuarial analysis deem that dealing with the rare lawsuit from known negligence to be more economical than re-tooling an entire line? Tobacco industry - how many years did tobacco industries know about ill side effects, addictive nature, etc of smoking and felt cover-ups and rare lawsuits to be economical in comparison to shutting the industry down? Overseas Manufacturing - How many companies, large brand names have had their goods made in poor conditions, exploiting environmental and lack of labours in various countries in order to make huge profits, such that years later, they can now "afford" to be environmentally and ethically sound? Robber Barons?? etc, etc... You can go on and on. True, there is an illegal, morally questionable nature to reps...just as there is for a lot of everyday, accepted goods if you really look at the history of either the industry or the people behind the industry. Either way...I enter buying reps with my eyes open. I like the watches. I like the designs. I wear them in public the same as I wear my gens. If asked, I tell truthfully when their reps...unless the person is an idiot. Some of the attraction I will admit, is due to the allure of various brands or history (personal or other) that the brand holds or that I've had with them.

My wife's had problems after about 4 months...my sister's is about a year and moving fine. I put in a spare movement in my wife's and it's working fine EXCEPT, the rotor never wound the thing (same with all of them I've had it seems). I have another spare movement...haven't tried it yet.

For the $300 mark, those are usually the older 17j versions aren't they? The 25j ones seem to be going for more like $400 I thought? You would have a better eye on the market than me.

The issue with reps is whether or not the servicing needs to be done in the short term (within a year to make the watch last at least 5 years WITH RELIABILITY), or whether to consider just letting it run dry and replace either the movement or the whole watch as you deem fit. A7750 based watches are a bit on the higher end to buy (usually $200USD +) and can last many years without servicing, BUT servicing within a year as per The Zigmeister's experience, will ensure the watch runs reliably for many years with improved performance (proper datewheel operation, silent rotor, clean reversing wheels, etc). It's expensive but something to consider for reps you think you want to hang on to. For reps you think you might lose interest in and not get wrist time over the long term...probably not worth servicing...just let it run dry. 2813 based movements aren't worth servicing. Just do a movement replacement if it breaks outside of a warranty period ($12 movements...$50 install charge)...or get a new watch. Yup...a $100 watch is considered disposable...but may give many years of service, and if you do a movement swap yourself...MANY years of economical service at $12 a movement and ZERO labour charge...just some trial, error and specialty tools). A21j movements...cheap...see 2813 above. Venus hand wind aka lemania hand wind aka Seagull manual wind - solid movement found to be clean and reliable at the start...won't need servicing for many years...but as mentioned before, it's a mechanical movement so should be serviced every 5 years to maintain RELIABLE service.

There's a cheaper Asian 21j movement version for about $118 from Hont, Watcheden or whatever...but although it's got the more accurate subdial colouring on the orange (white instead of black/blue), it has cheaper construction and movement, the movement is totally inaccurate for the functions of the gen and no acrylic bezel ring insert which I think makes the watch.

Hi Red, If I'm shooting with a tripod on manual in low light I get fewer problems, but it doesn't work for portrait work indoors. I'm comparing it to when I use a D200 which I've shot with many times which can achieve very usable results even at iso 3200. The G9 at >= ISO 200 is extremely noisy...pretty much any P&S for that matter. Having to carry the lens adapter around with the extra bulk makes me want to go for the extra performance of a DSLR instead of the G9.

You might have a short springbar in there. You can go to any el-cheapo watch repair shop and get them to fit a bigger springbar. With a leather strap (I don't have the bracelet on mine), I just use a wide fork blade on a Bergeon springbar tool to compress the strap to fit/remove the springbar. This has always been secure. Where I run into problems is if the STRAP is a bit narrow between the lugs (e.g. lug spacing is 22mm, and the strap is 21mm or shy of 22mm), then the wiggle between the lug horns can pop the springbar with a bit of sideways pull (e.g. pulling on/off a tight cuffed jacket).

That one can be sourced from any of the dealers.
