Guest avitt Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 I was recently contacted by a member who had seen my DLC work, and wanted to know if I could breathe new life into his daily beater, which he had "worn the hell out of". He warned me that his Seiko Kinetic was extremely worn, with lots of scratches on the case and bracelet. I asked if he could send me a few pics...Here's what I saw: Lots of wear, including the bezel, which seems to have an acrylic coating over scratched numbers. The owner told me that he wasn't wearing it anymore, because it looked too bad. (From his communication, there was no doubt in my mind that this was a beloved piece.) After I had the watch in hand for an assessment, I recommended a polishing and bead-blasting, to remove most of the scratches, and give the case and bracelet a uniform, matte look. I specifically recommended against DLC coating, because of the many risks. (The bezel could not be removed, so there was no way to know if there was a gasket or cement beneath it. The bracelet links looked pretty tight, so the coating might not cover all areas between the links. The numbers on the bezel could not be retained.) The owner insisted that we give DLC a try, and was willing to accept the risk of any shortcomings in the process. (I did assure him that worse comes to worst, I could always return the case and bracelet to a blasted finish.) Off to work I went... So, how did it come out? Well to me, and the owner, it was a complete transformation! All but the deepest of scratches have been removed (you can still see some "character lines" on the clasp). The beautiful, uniform dark coating gives the watch the completely new look! What do you think?

specialvat Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 Avitt is my hero, and great to deal with. He has basically created a new watch I love out of one I was in love with, if that makes sense. The heavy scratches were caused by a slight throwing the watch at someone incident a few years ago, needless to say drink was involved. Thank you T for all your help and time on this project

freddy333 Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 DLC is not my thing, but it does look good. I wonder how the finish will hold up since the owner does tend to WEAR his watch? Am I correct in assuming that DLC cannot be polished like the original steel can?
