tframo Posted December 13, 2015 Report Posted December 13, 2015 Hi guys. I want to get my dad a nice watch for Christmas. He isn't really into them like we are, but will appreciate it. I was going back and forth between gen and rep but I think I want to get him a gen for around $500. He has a large wrist 8.5" and prefers leather or Nato any suggestions?
Mike on a bike Posted December 13, 2015 Report Posted December 13, 2015 TF best talk to me I've researched in that range extensively for the wrist size. Give me idea what he like sure I know a few. Hamilton has a bunch in that range.http://www.jomashop.com/ha.html?dir=asc&gender=Men's&movement=Automatic&order=price 1
tframo Posted December 14, 2015 Author Report Posted December 14, 2015 Thanks Mike. I was looking at some of those
Mike on a bike Posted December 14, 2015 Report Posted December 14, 2015 Watch the leather made need to get XXL strap off of the net as most (90%) of the OEM ones are to short. Not very well known in the states but this are nice also. http://www.jomashop.com/certina-watches.html?dir=asc&gender=Men's&order=price
automatico Posted December 14, 2015 Report Posted December 14, 2015 Here is a cool Citizen Eco-Drive that will not break the bank:eBay item 331731523542
icoopernicus Posted December 14, 2015 Report Posted December 14, 2015 I'm with mike on this one, Hamilton is a go to in that price range, I recommend the Jazzmaster Viewmatic. This comes in different sizes but I would still recommend the 40mm as this is a much more timeless size. You should also be able to find a Seiko SARB in that price range which is a great looking watch and an excellent value.
508-Fanatic Posted December 14, 2015 Report Posted December 14, 2015 Can't go wrong with Hamilton! great value
Nanuq Posted December 14, 2015 Report Posted December 14, 2015 How about something a little more old school?1958 Omega Seamaster
icoopernicus Posted December 14, 2015 Report Posted December 14, 2015 Definitely cool, but maybe not for someone who isn't really into watches, they might not appreciate it for what it is. I stole a Tudor from a coworker who wanted to just give it to me because it looked so old and junky and kind of like a ladies watch, I had to force him to take some money for it.
UmpaHimself Posted December 15, 2015 Report Posted December 15, 2015 One thing I would double check on is if he is willing to deal with an auto movement. Not everybody is. If he is, then Magrette make a nice large Panerai inspired sports watch. You can also get him a nice sterile Big Pilot homage as they can be sourced really easily on eBay or even Amazon these days.

Lots of folks are not into watches at all, and a mechanical movement may prove to be a nuisance. Things that are nuisances tend to be put aside.Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
docthor Posted December 16, 2015 Report Posted December 16, 2015 Interesting that no one mentions Seiko. I'd say nothing beats a Sumo in that price range and they look marvellous on Zulu/Nato too!
kernow Posted December 16, 2015 Report Posted December 16, 2015 Some good suggestions here. A few questions for you OP, do you think your dad would like Quartz or auto/manual, classic or modern, does he recognise brand names (rather wound he appreciate them), large or small - he may have a large wrist that can handle a 47mm Pam, but if he's used to 37mm watches he's not going to like it! Regardless, there are some fine suggestions posted. I like the Seiko or Hamilton options.
dvn Posted December 17, 2015 Report Posted December 17, 2015 How about this for $429 with coupon code of AFFSLIM429http://www.ashford.com/us/watches/hamilton/H38615255.pid?source=406555555
Revere Posted December 17, 2015 Report Posted December 17, 2015 Look no further than the tissot visodate
Alfalover Posted December 20, 2015 Report Posted December 20, 2015 a seiko diver on a NATO? I saw one in a shop yesterday for 300$, it looked marvellous
tframo Posted December 20, 2015 Author Report Posted December 20, 2015 I went with this Hamilton and a few different natos for him to choose http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000EQ0BM2/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1450612950&sr=1-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65
Mike on a bike Posted December 20, 2015 Report Posted December 20, 2015 Nice TF the Khaki should be great on a nato and at least for me about the right size for the big wrist crowd that are not into cuckoo clocks on their wrists.
