Pugwash
I start a new job on Monday (finally!) as a Senior UNIX Sysadmin for a company that does web sites for various clients. I only found out the start date today, but I'm pretty chuffed about the whole thing, right up until Mrs Pugwash laughed at me and said "You're thinking about what watch to wear" as I was resizing my Seiko Monster bracelet and suddenly, I was. Until then, it hadn't bothered me, but now she's said it, I'm trying to decide. You'll notice there's no Rolexes on the options as I don't think that sends the right message at all. So, here are the main contenders in pictures: IWC GST Chrono IWC 3717 Omega Planet Ocean 45mm Breitling Steelfish Panerai 111 Panerai

Pugwash
What color is the suit? That may play a pretty big role... Suit? I don't think I'll be wearing a suit. Oh, I wear mostly black. If I wear a suit, it'll be charcoal. Don't expect white or light shirts, either.
capt_cope
Start with a cheap gen. Don't want your boss' taking notice of your spending habits now do ya? If your boss notices an IWC on your wrist, and asks about it you can have one of three options: tell him you made too much money at your last job and won't be happy here, tell him you live beyond your means, or tell him you could give a rat's ass about copyrights, and will probably use the company ip to upload your newwest torrents. Or you can start with a seiko, and work your way into your other collection. But not when all eyes are on you eh?

mkymk
Personally I would go with PO since that's a pretty generic watch that many of my co-workers have. Don't want to start wearing Seikos cause when you break out the IWC people will go "Whoa! where'd you get that?" No one will ask on your first day and just assume you're into watches. My 2 cents. Victoria
First, CONGRATS PUGWASH. Please tell me this doesn't mean you'll have (ultimately) less time for the rep forums...in the beginning, okay. But try to squeeze RWG in, at least. Secondly, yes, usually I would say go with a gen. But I chose the UPO on the SS bracelet since next to the SFSO, it's the best looking, most accurate rep you got. Knowing your suit colour AND TIE would definitely help, though. slai
Suit? You know the saying "when hell freezes over"? In the IT world, we say "when a UNIX admin wears a suit."
Pugwash
Knowing your suit colour AND TIE would definitely help, though. What I wore to the interview: Charcoal suit, black shirt, no tie. I think I might have a tie somewhere, but I don't do ties.
NotASolder
UNIX SySAdmin... Hit them hard. Only one shot to make a first impression . From what I've seen here, nothing says 'I care' like a PAM Base with a ridiculously THICK leather strap. Or wear what Dilbert does

Ahh, well you are an IT specialist. This is almost wedding-formal for such professionals. UPO on SS bracelet, without doubt. Alternatively, the Tag as a nice change of pace. It's almost like a Rolex in notoriety, and not quite as overwhelming and macho-looking as an Omega PO.
geo1nah2a
Good luck with your new work. The Omega is a too recognizable brand for non-wis people.. Like a Rolex-junior. Unless you want to make such a statement, I would stay away. I vote 3717. Anything else is too big and will get extra wrist checks. Tucked under your cuff this is an elegant, powerful choice. The slevin (sorry to rub that in) or a ingy would be even closer. Keep the rest of the pack for future. Good start. KR G

Don't expect white or light shirts, either. Congrats on the new job. I hope it proves sufficiently lucrative to enable you to continue to feed your watch habit. If your shirt (or entire outfit) is black, I would wear something steel & monochrome. Nothing catches the eye better than understated simplicity. Alternately, if your co-workers are below 40 and hip, they will probably appreciate a Pan more than anything else.
