  1. So when's your birthday Clive? May be a toss up, with Omni possibly thrown in to the mix! And we can't ask MU- never ask a lady her age However when DLG visits from time to time, we would be close to the show stopper, I think. Offshore
  2. OK, A couple of members, have PM'd me as well, and as no one appears to have a copy of this, I have ordered one. Talked with Ziggy tonite, and we will come up with an arrangement for both Cd's. I also have stage 1 of the Time Zone watchmaking course, as well as a couple of interesting PDF's on collecting watches, and profitability in watchmaking.(short books) Once I get this CD, I will post again, and see what I can put together as a compilation. Then those interested in all, or parts, can advise and I will send their needs. Offshore
  3. chief, Sapphire into its previous case should really just pop in. (support the underside with your thumb if you have any worries) If it does feel at all tight, obviously don't force it.The other trick is to heat the casing, making it expand, and the crystal will "fall" in! Normally 80F-90F (hot -but not to burn fingers) And if there are any questions in your mind, still go with a gasket glue as a backup. Offshore
  4. Zigg, Will give you a yell! Get my PM? Offshore
  5. Yes, You are a little confused None of the sites you mention, have the same "owner" or in fact admins. The real fact is the membership owns the forum. And I was of the impression, that, at least with the 1st two you mentioned, once you became a valued and respected member, by posting, and contributing, you may be able to offer a watch for trade. You should realise that this is not your local marketplace, so any trading needs to be between "consenting adults" Hence the need to establish some credentials. Otherwise we see scam artists, or worse still representatives of copyright holders, surfing around, trying to uncover the sources of this horrifying enterprise... a true scourge on mankind. ( Not the rep watches... the representatives ) So enjoy your time here and at the other sites, and maybe down the track, you too could earn your spurs.. so to speak. Offshore PS Did I mention GAF!
  6. Chief, Haven't done an FM, but have done quite a few Oblong and "fancy" shapes. I take it we are talking acrylic here!! ( If it's mineral glass or saphire, it would be original and must fit!) First, check that it doesn't just fit with finger pressure. If it does, some GS Hypo cement, which is more like a gasket will work. The real trick is to make sure you have totally cleaned inside the bezel area.... all the old UV glue or cement, soak the case (only) in acetone if need be. Then use a screwdriver to clean up so you have a nice clean & flat area. Now check the crystal, it should pop in with finger pressure. If it is a new crystal (not previously fitted), mic the bezel and the crystal, and check how close it is to fitting. You will then have to lightly sand the crystal to fit! Also use some fine rouge to finally polish the crystals' edges. Then some Hypo or UV cure cement, pop in the crystal...done. Offshore
  7. D4M, Try it now, should be OK. Long story short, Here is a copy/paste of his spiel. He wants GBP 19.99 plus post GBP2. Seems like info worth having to me. Offshore
  8. I posted this in another thread. In case anyone missed it, am looking for responses. So if there is interest ( have noted yours Avitt) please leave a message here. Offshore
  9. See if you can define a style from this list. http://www.gssupplies.com/plastic_watch.html It's probably a PHD, XHD or PKH, maybe a CT! If so I may well have, I have 20,000 in my drawers ... if not, can get ( although a local supply house may have as well.) Offshore PS, When you "assembledit, did you insert the plexi? If yes, did you use something like GS cement? Cos it really is more a gasket, than a true cement!
  10. Hmmm, maybe not too pedantic doc! He could alternatively start by using one of these! Offshore
  11. Gee, you like your eggs well done! Offshore
  12. Guys, I'm with Pugs. My vocation is purchasing. I have made a lot of money from my abilities, and equally lost similar amounts. When it comes down to the crunch, an item... any item... no matter what.... is worth as much as someone pays for it. Take your motor vehicle guides... red/blue /green.. book... they are market average guidea. The people who put them together have 1000's of car sales to compile statistical info.... and guess what... they are at best an indication. (and these companies make a sizeable income from publishing the data) There are too many contributing factors in a final price.... area, how used (by whose defintion), model popularity for the region, etc etc... my god, in an area such as motor vehicles... which is scrutinised, analyzed.. etc .... some of the people, get their pricing right, some of the time. Dealerships employ expert valuers for this purpose... and sack them regularly for not getting it right! And these guys have industry and local knowledge, do it 30 times a day, and have a handy little data generated model, called a buying guide to work from! When a buyer and a seller get together, and a deal is struck... that is the value of that item. If 5 minutes later, another two get together, on the same item/condition, and a price say 20% lower than previous is reached, that then becomes that items' value.... ad infinitum. Can I also refer you to a recent article published here, which exposed the practice by Omega, of putting their own watches up for auction, and shill bidding them up, just so a higher selling price was established for that model. Nothing more than artificially contrived "valuations" (sort of sounds like some of the rep pricing we have recently seen ) A buyers price guide for rep watches?... New or used......Not a snowflakes hope in hell! Do your own research!...................Caveat Emptor. Offshore
  13. Spotted on the bay today- http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Vintage-Landeron-48...1QQcmdZViewItem As always Caveat Emptor. Also an Omega http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi...em=110197107961 And it's worth checking this guys "Other Items" he has a few movements/projects for sale. Silly buggers' getting married, and needs to give up his watches, to pay for his honeymoon Again, Caveat Emptor.... aside from his bloody awful photography... the story sounds plausible, and he appears to know his watches. Offshore
  14. True, actually also doesn't mean you would receive a watch at all! Offshore
  15. Time, I believe to chime in with my thoughts. This as a long term member of this and many other forums, not as a mod as such, (although it helps to have a knowledge of what goes on behind the scenes) The direction the forum has taken of late, has been a great concern to me personally. There have been plentiful discussions privately, on this and other somewhat related matters. Firstly, it is not within the powers of the admin team to act on anyone posting, until and unless rules are broken. (Even then it can take some time, as the team need to discuss these things) However, I cannot say, I have been happy with the direction in which we have been heading, and the many posts from long term contributing members here, some who speak of leaving over this, can only be viewed with alarm. From a mods point of view, we don
  16. Welcome aboard ilj, Whether you join to become more assured that you are buying a quality rep, at a fair price, from someone who won't take your money and run....OR... so that you can be confident, that the Rolex you are about to pony up for, is in fact a gen.......you will find (all) most of your answers here! However, the greatest thing available, is the ability to ask a question, if you are not 100% sure. Because you will find, that within these walls, reside some of the most knowleagable watchaholics around. Seek and ye shall find. Ask and you will be answered. Great to have you with us. Offshore
  17. Thanks for another great quality review, and post Steph! You are a valuable contributor to our little family group. Offshore
  18. So here is a hypothetical answer. How will you ever know if the watch has been serviced, or pressure tested? (And especially if those "extra" seals have benn added?) You must TRUST that if a problem raises it's head down the track, a resolution may be found. I beleive you have not carried out what is known as " due dilligence" prior to purchasing. Beleive me, the search button is your friend. I also note that you are a fellow countryman. Limited research may show, that more than a few "older" board members reside in Oz. Should you wish to ask a question, there is a PM or email facility available, to contact some members who have seen all sides of the equation. The forum is here to assist those who desire to own rep watches. There is a huge volume of info available. Find it. There are many, many very knowleagable members here, who will be only to happy to assist you in coming to responsible buying decisions. However it is more difficult to rebuild the tower of Pisa, after it has fallen over. Hypothetically yours, Offshore.
  19. I know that the next time I was in that store, I would seek her out and say- "Gee, I'm really worried I may have paid too much for this, after what you told me last visit. Is it possible for the watchmaker/manager to give me an estimate of it's value?" When an appraisal was completed, the look on her face, would be just like the DRSD.... PRICELESS! Offshore
  20. I really wish you guys would stop that! Coffee and keyboards just don't mix Terrific. Offshore
  21. Maybe someone more knowleagable can help me here. Until recently, I have been receiving subscribed newsletters, from a number of different sites. A couple of weeks back, I noticed, they had stopped. I thought of a possible change on my spam filters,(IE, Outlook Express, or even my AV programme) and checked, but these were all still OK. I finally contacted one of the organisations who send these newsletters, to be told that the problem was my ISP, who has recently increased its spam settings. Contacted them ( Bigpond here in Oz.. who are our major national telephone Co), and I am just getting the run around, and no real answers. (mainly auto replies) I know I should just move to another ISP, but that is just a HUGE hassle... changing email addys... multiple forums etc etc.... Seriously it would probably be a good days work to totally tidy up and change eveything! So the question is, can I do anything about the level of mail I receive thru their server? Any/all advice appreciated. Offshore (IT noob)
  22. UB7, All the info you will need is stamped on the inside of the caseback. ( and of course on the movement) This may help. http://www.ofrei.com/page_146.html If you go to this page and register, you can submit an enquiry and obtain much info from Omega. http://www.omegawatches.com/cu_vintage/ Hope that helps. Offshore
  23. Give my regards to Dawn!! ( I got the Watch Crystal Encyclopedia from them) Also, it may be prudent not to mention reps, as they are a bit "old school" and maybe not too receptive to this hobby. Offshore
  24. @UB7 The fact is, that the one tested, was indeed VERY waterproof, some may say pressure proof as well However, that does not necessarily mean the next one is the same! Semantics maybe, but we do know well, the lack of QC in these things, so I don't beleive we can assume that because this one "survived".... because the He valve worked..... etc etc, that all SD's will do the same. Would still suggest that any aspiring owners have a watch pressure tested before getting anywhere near water. Offshore
