i have been thinking abt getting the gen.. do they get any wrist time alligoat? thanks flex
  3. That's one beuaitful watch.. it's so nice to own a piece with the story behind it and your effort to restore the watch. the dial seems to be very mint! waht a keeper!
  4. i tried the gen insert.. fits perfectly crystal fitted ok too, but i didn't want to put the retention ring and bezel ring on. too much to risk my gen doomed plexi.
  5. I tired it on the other night. do you have much success? ironcially, the cartel 1665 SD caseback fits perfectly on the 5513..
  6. A member of the forum emailed me if i could take some pics to show the differences between the cartel 5513 and my gen (circa 63). My gen is the earlier sub with the thin case. (the later production of 5513 has the thick case). My gen has a service 'flat' plexi. The cartel is untouched, un-modded. The gen bezel has deeper cut. The case-back is also thinner. The cartel case-back is so thick almost as thick as the 1665 sea-dweller. Neither phong's, or genuine case-back will not fit the cartel case-set.
  7. not sure how i missed this post. nice summary. always love your posts!
  8. love the gen dial case is nice too.
  9. There is no good modern Daytona on the market. Once you hold a genuine Daytona on your hand, you can spot the flaws on the rep quite easily. I would suggest you look into BK/ WM9 on the secondary market. They are quite accurate. Your boss and your friends are into watch.. but that doesnt mean you can't also build a datejust, date, 5500 ariking frankens.. with geninue parts...to me, people with vintage watches have better taste

    nice work on the CG
  12. The 1570 movements are available in hacking and non-hacking. if I recall it correctly Rolex change their 1570 (1575) caliber to hacking around mid-70's or early 70's.
  13. here is some pic of my Franken 5508 that I wish to share..really comfortable watch. highly recommended! - Cartel case with a21/J - Movement was serviced converted to non-hacking - Dial refinished by MY - Hands and dial were relumed - Gen service plexi T21 - Gen crown - Bezel has been painted to bronze color
  14. In much the same way as I can't tell you how long a piece of string is without seeing it, I can't tell you what was the problem of your 1665. There could be many problems ranging from missing a case back seal or the stem seal to a crystal gasket. Once the problems are identified and solved (i.e. tested by a watchmaker), the MBK 1665 are bulletproof. the MBK built are very solid. Personally I have taken a MBK 1665 to my local beach for three years of surfing without any issue. Mind you that all my watch are serviced every 2.5 to 3 years interval.
  15. depends.. if you are into going to the rep market, pls goto Guangzhou. if you are interested in some general shopping and shopping for your lady, you can easily goto Shenzhen from HK by train. if you are into the new casino, then you will have to gooto Macau..
  16. Once you have stepped into the franken Pre-V nd Pre-A builds, there is no turning back
  17. The problem is the Gen Superdome plexi. i had about two of them. they all had cracks on them. The seller had asked me to 'give up' on them. Either you keep the superdoom look for the look or change it to a service flat-top for every day use.
