One for All? Looking for the ultimate travel watch
wiesn089 replied to Nightwatch's topic in General Discussion
Gen Aqua Terra 8500 with a very useful independently adjustable hour hand. Or GMTIIC. -
Hi Paul, take a look at this review http://www.rwgforum.net/topic/166427-tc-sub-v5-kh-dial-review. It covers all aspects about TC's sub perfectly. While $560 might seem a lot to you, especially if you're just getting into watches, you will have a hard time finding high(er) quality gen watches (mechanical) at this price point. TC's subs are actually pretty good value.

I know how you feel. I recently tried on the rose gold anniversary Royal Oak... 55k if I'm not mistaken, a sad moment when I had to take it off the wrist.

That 1680 is sweet, great stuff!

Speedmaster Professional on Ebay - Gen or Franken?
wiesn089 replied to profrainy's topic in The Omega Area
A little bit beat up, but otherwise perfectly fine. If you clean it up, maybe factor in a service, you'll have a great beater/ daily wearer. Edit: It seems to have been serviced some time ago. The hands look like luminova replacements, which would put me off a little as their colour doesn't match the nicely aged tritium on the dial anymore. Again that's something I'd figure into my maximum bid. Nice watch, but imo it's definitely in need of some work if you want something special. -
You can buy brand new 93150s at every decent AD. They are about 900 Euros sealed.

Stunning, love it!

I'm no Tudor expert, especially when it comes to modern ones, but something seems off with this one. The lume doesn't look like aged tritium for one, and the case is remarkably little refined, plus the pictures are ridiculously bad.

These are my boots atm. Floris van Bommel, handmade in the Netherlands. Similar quality to Loake, which I like and own as well. Especially the 1880 series is amazing and well worth the money. http://www.florisvanbommel.com/uploads/catalogue/shoe/original/1057901.jpg

Maybe I'll just go that route as well and see how I like the watch in the first place before shelling out massive amount of cash on a 3055 or 3155. I could always upgrade to a gen movement later if I decide that it's going to be a keeper...

Personally I just see the need for watchwinders when it comes to perpetual or annual calendar watches where setting everything right again can be a huge pain. My rotation consists of four watches atm and I don't mind setting them in the morning if one has run out. I actually like interacting with my watches on a regular basis that way, but then again I'm a big fan of handwound movements as well...

Interesting, Matt for some reason I can't snd you a PM, could you please pm me?

As for me the main appeal in frankens is in the movement and the dial, a gen movement is a must for me. I might have the chance to purchase a 16234 case and a 3155 movement. The case will probably need the rehaut reduced, but other than that I should be fine, I guess. I wonder if Phong is really the only one capable of doing this, with correct dimensions it shouldn't be too difficult for another professional I hope...

Hmm, why is that? Too big a height difference? Here are the heights of the various movements: 1556 (DD 1803): 7.03mm 3035 (DJ 16000): 6.35mm 3055 (DD 18000): 7.11mm 3135 (DJ 16200): 6.00mm 3155 (DD 18200): 6.45mm If a case made for a 6.35mm movement can be made to fit a 7.03mm movement, I should at least be able to fit a 3155 (6.45mm) in a 16200 case (6.00mm) with some modifications, shouldn't I? Feet location on a 3155 and 3055 should be the same...

Thanks guys. Yeah I know about the precious metal cases, but to be honest, that's not something I worry about. SS DDs have been produced in such small numbers that you won't "get away" with wearing one and discussing it with someone in the know anyways. Imo Gold watches are great, but I just don't see myself shelling out 6k Euro for an overpolished 1803 or 18039 on a strap. When it comes to nice examples somebody usually has put a semi-franken italian President bracelet on it and is asking 10k+ for it. For me the value is in the dial, the movement and quality of the case. Because these would all be gen Rolex I'm fine with that. Btw.: Here's its eternally lasting, bottomless hole buddy

Hi, just a few days ago I was able to buy a beautiful and pretty rare slate grey Day-Date dial for a 18039 in NOS condition . So far so good . I immediately started researching a SS Day-Date build similar to Ubi's and Valty's 1803s based on Datejust cases. To my surprise the period correct Day-Date models 180XX had sapphire crystals installed already, whereas the 160XXs Datejusts of that era still came with plastic crystals. Since my dial will only fit a 3055 movement which premiered in the 180XX Day-Dates and not a 1565 movement from the 1803s a sapphire case is a must for me. Luckily the later 162XX Datejusts from the 90s do come with sapphire crystals and the case dimensions should not have changed dramatically compared to the earlier 160XXs. So now I'm thinking about building a SS Day-Date based on one of these cases, preferably a 16234 with a WG fluted bezel already installed. Do you guys think a 3055 will fit a 162XX case made for a 3135 movement? Any idea what I will need to calculate for a 3055 Day-Date movement and NOS hands and if these are even available? Will a WG 180XX crown fit a 162XX case without further modifications? If I was able to source a 3055 at a reasonable price this project should not be totally ridiculous and I will be able to get it finished for less than half of what a 18039 on a leather strap will set me back? Am I missing something here? Do you think I should embark on this project or should I just sell the dial and go for a 1803 build or even a gen birthyear DJ 160XX? I just love hunting for parts, and that dial had me mesmerized immediately. On the other hand I don't want this project to last an eternity again and even more important burn another bottomless hole into my pockets.

I love Longines, amazing value for the money. Here's my absolute favorite: L990 Heritage Limited Edition. Lovely watch, but almost impossible to come by these days
-
All fitment issues aside, your movement doesn't seem to be in very good shape. It may be the lighting, but imo there's significant discolorisation visible on some parts, which might indicate moisture damages (rust etc.). I would definitely pass on that. Daytona builds require a considerable investment, from my experience saving a few bucks on dubious parts along the way will cost you more in the long run.

I wear Nudie and Replay. They fit great and are incredibly durable.
-
I agree that building gen powered frankens only really make sense for high dollar watches like double reds, Comex and the like these days. Gen parts like dials, bezels, inserts or bracelets are just too expensive to justify low end reference frankens over gens imo.

Why not spend a little more and go with a Phong case? To me Yuki has always been the least attractive offering. His cases lack Phong's quality and cost substantially more than MBWs. With a little negotiating you should be able to get a Phong case for under $1000 even less if you don't buy the complete case set...

Cool, thanks for sharing.
