Mini Rant - In line with Daniel's "Scammer in our midst"
panerai153 replied to panerai153's topic in General Discussion
That's perfect!! And of course they will send you about 3-4 PM's wondering where you are, why didn't you send the Paypal info, "please, I neeeed this watch"!! And maybe at some point the light bulb goes on in their pea brain and they realize " wait a minute, isn't this the same seller that I PM'ed about buying a watch a few months back, got his info and never followed through? Now I understand, he isn't going to get back to me, ever" -
Really great!! Love the old Rover.

Mini Rant - In line with Daniel's "Scammer in our midst"
panerai153 replied to panerai153's topic in General Discussion
This is the one thing that really pisses me off!! Guy PM's you with a "Beat down" offer, you figure what the Heck, the watch has been on sale for a while, I'm tired of fooling with it, so it's "Sure, I'll sell it for that price, here is my PayPal. then total Silence, guy totally disappears. If you aren't really interested, please don't play games and waste my time. If you do, one of these days, I may have something that you really want, but guess what, there may not be a time waster list on the forum, but I have one!! Probably a good chance that I won't take a second chance on you. -

10 greatest watches of all time ?
panerai153 replied to Mike on a bike's topic in General Discussion
All this proves is any idiot can post a you tube video. While I agree with a couple of his choices, he has left out a ton of wonderful iconic watches. assembling a list like this is a lesson in futility at best, everyone will have their own favorites, What he should have said was "This is my idea of the top ten watches of all time" Not "THE Top ten watches of all times" -
Happy Thanksgiving to all. Have a great day and don't eat too much!!

Mini Rant - In line with Daniel's "Scammer in our midst"
panerai153 replied to panerai153's topic in General Discussion
Mike, when I talked about a "disappearing buyers list" it was spoken more out of frustration, and "pipe dream" thoughts. I agree that these are the sort of things that would be difficult if not impossible to manage, and could create a problem for innocent folks that get caught up in a deal with a dissatisfied buyer with a vindictive streak!! I have another mini rant that is in line with Daniel's Scammer scenario. It's about those people, like this guy, who PM you that they want the watch, or part or strap. Usually there are a couple of scenarios, first after they say, I'll take it, they then want more photos from specific angles, etc. So you have to either dig out more photos or take more. All this takes time. When folks ask me for more photos, I'm glad to comply, but they have to send me their email address for additional photos. The second and frequent scenario is they PM, "I'll take it" then when you PM them back, they want to beat you down on the price!! "Can you do the deal for 300.00 USD rather than your 350.00 USD asking price. or will you send it express mail to Bulgaria, included in the sale price"? Now first off, when you PM me that you want it, that means at the stated price, and the stated conditions, which in my sales threads usually is, "Watch will be shipped USPS Priority Mail w tracking within the CONUS, sales outside the CONUS are at the actual cost of the shipping". How clear is that? So why do folks tell you they want something, and then try to change the conditions of the sale? If you want a deal, PM me and ask me if I can reduce the price, change the shipping, add and extra strap, etc. for the same asking price. I can either answer yes, or no, I can't. Simple as that. But telling me that you want the item, then try to beat me down after you tell me you want it. doesn't sit well with me at all. And when I have gone through all of these steps and we agree on a deal, and then you suddenly disappear, it infuriates me to the point that unless you come back, which I know you won't, with a good excuse, I more than likely wouldn't sell to you anyway. I know that everyone who sells on our sales forums has been subjected to all of the above. It's frustrating and time consuming to have to deal with people who are "Playing". I wish we could have a list ,only viewable by VIP and above members with a list of " Disappearing time wasters". I know that there often legitimate excuses as to why someone doesn't complete a sale, but there is absolutely no excuse for someone not sitting down at their computer, tablet or phone and sending a short PM to the seller, "I'm very sorry, but something has come up and I'm not going to be able to buy your watch. GLWS and thanks for your time and effort, it's sincerely appreciated" If you take 30 seconds to PM me a message, I will understand, but if you leave me hanging,I can promise you If you come back later and want to buy something, I will not hold it for one second for you, and it isn't yours until the money is in my PayPal account.

I believe that buyers put us in a real dilemma at times. You put up a watch, parts, strap, whatever in the sales forum. Someone PM's you "I'll take it. send me your PayPal info" And like in your case, the buyer suddenly disappears. Is he just someone who is trolling through the sales forums, wants something, but can't afford it, wife will divorce him if he buys another watch, or just a 16 year old kid having fun at other folks expense. or is he a real scammer who is "Pfishing" for PayPal info hoping to crack into your account and either get the cash out, or use it as a backdoor into your bank accounts? Most of these transactions are built on trust, and unfortunately, there are a lot of untrustworthy folks out there who are aware of this and are more than happy to take advantage of out trusting relationships. It makes me a little uneasy, especially in light of all of the news about credit card information being stolen. The thieves and hackers are always trying to get something for nothing. We just don't want that "something" to be ours!!

I have to agree with you. This is a dress watch, ands to me it would only look good on a Alligator, Croc, or possibly a nice leather like a Horween Shell Cordovan, and honestly that's a stretch as well. There are some watches that are sort ofg in the grey area that can be worn as casual or dress, but I don't think this one is one of them.

Price check: Gen Zenith El Primero Striking 10th

I don't know, neither of the posters had a photo up, don't know why, maybe they were back so far that the photos expired. Often happens with photos downloaded from photobucket . Here is one just like the photo in your post, asking 6100.00 USD http://forums.watchuseek.com/f29/fs-zenith-striking-10th-el-primero-limited-edition-1149994.html Here is the one for 4500.00 USD, no photos, http://forums.watchuseek.com/f29/fs-zenith-striking-10th-limited-edition-1969-a-1092535.html Here is another one for 6050.00 USD same as what you are looking for. http://forums.watchuseek.com/f29/fsot-zenith-el-primero-striking-10th-ref-03-2041-4052-69-c496-1080490.html Might want to give these a look, email the owner for more info, may get thenm down a fair amount, depending on how desperate they are to sell!! -

Like Tom said, unfortunately no good ones. Genuine used have gotten ridiculously expensive. 700-900 USD for one, and it will probably have some wear and stretch. Some of the supply houses sell unmarked bracelets, with them, you can use the links, gen endlinks and clap and end up with a nice bracelet, but it's still going to cost several hundred bucks. Unfortunately, the day of the 400 dollar gen bracelet has gone the way of the Carrier Pigeon!! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Why wouldn't a high end rep with a good movement( ETA or equivalent) last as long as a mid range genuine watch? All watches require periodic service. That is the lifeblood of a watch, properly serviced and correctly oiled. The other weak points of all watches, but reps especially is the crown/ tube, the rep tubes are probably made of and inferior, softer grade of steel, and are more prone to stripping.. With most reps, the crown gets stripped, usually because the owner isn't careful about how he screws the crown on the tube. With Rolex reps and quite a few others, that is remedied by a genuine or high end aftermarket crown/tube and care when setting and screwing the crown back down.the crystal and the gaskets/ seals are another problem . Over time they age, crack, dry out and the water resistance is compromised. That's why a complete service at a Rolex AD includes a new crown/tube, Crystal, seals and gaskets. They know from experience that these are the weak points, and need attention periodically. Good movement, regular service and care with any watch is the key to longevity. There is no reason a well maintained high end rep shouldn't last for decades. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

You have several options, the first of course is an ETA2824-2 selling now from the supply houses for north of 200 USD, the next is a Sellita , another very good SWISS movement, but priced about the same as the 2824. The third option, and the one I would use is the Seagull ST2130. This is a Chinese movement, but from and old established Chinese watch and movement manufacturer. I bought one about six months ago for 99.00 USD shipped to the USA. The seller , from Portugal doesn't carry them any more, though. I tried to get one a couple of weeks ago, and she told me that they had raised the prices and she quit carrying them. They are great movements if you can find one now. Price check: Gen Zenith El Primero Striking 10th
panerai153 replied to fraggle42's topic in General Discussion
Richard, since this is such a limited edition, probably not a whole lot of sales. There is one on WUS that was posted in September, never marked sold, so may or may not have sold. The seller was asking 6K, watch with all the papers, boxes, etc. Just found a second one on WUS started out at 5995.00 USD end of Sept, last bump on 10/10, it was reduced to 4500.00 USD, Never posted as sold. I think a big problem with watches that are out of the main line, hard to sell and they often sell at a big discount. Very unfortunate, as Zenith manufactures some wonderful watches, but the problem is, they are wonderful watches that no one knows about!! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk -

I think that both you and Tom Horn (Bet not many folks know who the real Tom Horn is, unless they are real cowboys or fans of the old West) are correct. I have always said in many posts that you have to be really careful about builds. It's very easy to get carried away with one and all of a sudden, you are almost in the range of a genuine. This is especially true of contemporary Rolex watches. Lots of folks talk about dropping a genuine movement in a highly modified 16610 or a 1680. Problem is when you add the gen dial, hands, Crown /tube, endlinks and bracelet, you are probably into a build that is 75-80% of the cost of a gen. Of all my Rolex frankens the only one that has a gen Rolex movement is my 1665. As Tom alluded to, this is one that will probably not get sold, but may be given to my son at some point. All of the others have ETA movements, which in some cases like the 1680, isn't completely accurate, but it's a 200 USD movement as opposed to a 1570 that's over 1K. If you loosely follow a rule of thumb of not spending over about 30-40% of the cost of a genuine on a build, then you are not going overboard. But as Tom stated, when the prices get high the buyer pool shrinks dramatically. What is a real shame is to see a beautiful watch that was painstakingly built over a long time, one that the builder poured his heart and soul into, languish on the sales forum, for weeks with nary a serious offer. Eventually, the owner will do one of three things, he will pull the watch, resign himself to keeping and enjoying it, drop the price to a "Fire sale" price and hopefully sell, or part it out and hope that the sum of the parts will recoup most of his expenses. Sad but true, with all the thousands of folks on these forums, the number of buyers willing to shell out 3-5K for a rep are miniscule. After all , most of the folks who cruise through here are looking to buy a 200-300 USD Rep of a 5-10K watch. For the neophytes, especially those that are just passing through, if they could afford a 5K watch, they would buy a genuine Rolex!! One thing that we should all do when we start a build is ask ourselves, can I sell this watch when it's time to let it go. Obviously, most of us can't or won't face up to that question. It's really easy to "overbuild the neighborhood" to use a real estate term, but it's easy to do if you aren't careful.
