If you check out his website, you'll notice he is also stealing a "trusted collector's" name... sort of... Thief's Website

Ok, I was in a strange mood today, so, I'm breaking some "rules"... Antique Rado Starliner 999... ... on a black NATO ...

I tend to base my love of a watch on it's technical merits weighted against value... An example might be Glassutte watches. There are a few names associated with the region, most were part of the same conglomerate during the cold war years, now they are separate entities once again... One of the defining characteristics of a Glassutte watch is the 3/4 plate. It may not be much to look at for some, as it obscures most of the movement so that parts aren't readily visible, but perfectly lining up all the little parts to mate properly with the place at once takes incredible care and skill. Now, if I can buy a watch for a few hundred bucks, that is a genuine Glassutte, just as 'simply complex' with the same interesting history as any other Glassutte for several thousand, I'm probably going to buy quite a few of the ones for a few hundred bucks, unless I covet a particular movement with complication that is simply unobtainable for for less. That is why I own several GUB's but only a handful of U.G. and only 2 ALS (with only a single ALS being modern). So, to me, "what is a better watch?" is "Which watch offers the best technical merit available for the money?" The SFSO seems to provide technical excellence, more accurate replication than most, and extreme value. Therefore, entirely deserving of the title "Replica of the Year"... The HBB doesn't make my list, Gen or Rep., mainly because it doesn't offer anything of value or technical merit above any other watch out there, other than it's modernistic DERIVATIVE styling.. yeah, there are lot's of parts to the case, making it pretty complicated, but the case still looks like an AP ROO, which looks like a Rolex Viceroy...

YeSSS, Pizza Margherita, rapidly burnt in a wood-fired stone oven is my favorite... Yeppurs Pug, I remember seeing this at least 15 years ago... back when 3D animated Ford commercials were still "cool" to pay for the download time to watch for some people (America [n idiots] On-Line). (Pretty sure the "Curry and Kebabs was originally something Chinese and Greek) Uhuh... Section 8 Ah Victoria, thanks for the reminder of how fitting it is that Darwin should grace the title of an award for Idiocy.

It's definitely a Gen... I've seen this shorter GMT hand before (not sure, but it may be a service replacement)... It's obviously been ridden hard and put up wet and dirty for a long unspecified period, where it corroded, but for a 40 year old watch, everything is as good as can reasonably be expected for a tool watch that has actually been used. Well it well... GREAT FIND.

Nice TT. And thanks for the photographic evidence that you can find crooked crystals on a Rolex every once in a while... And here is photographic evidence that when you have too much Gran Reserva Mezcal Azul (no matter how much it costs...), finding your Rolex (and standing still) can be a problem... So, go easy on the Celebrating the new watch.
-
No, I wouldn't. I'd say he's a scammer with a good story... and a franken... with an incorrect crystal.

Yes Freddy, I agree the watch is a GEN SeaDweller... but the examples I have seen from the very limited pool of "factory re-paint" DRSD's have ALL faded to PINK. The bright RED of this re-paint just looks too new compared to the rest of the dial, and the dial appears newer than the rest of the watch (compare to hands and dw) ... and the 'paint' doesn't look as 'clean' as I would expect to see. I'll stick to my opinion that it is a repainted re-dial, and if there is documentation from Rolex stating that this is a Double Red, then it is apparently an effort to restore it to it's 'proper' configuration.
-
Freddy, that DRSD looks like a re-paint to me... Biggest tell other than the letters standing way proud of the dial, and white showing through the red in various places? Notice that the three zeros in 2000 are three different shapes. It might be a Gen, but I don't think it's a Gen DRSD, unless someone tried to restore a redialed DRSD by painting over a replacement white dial.

I cringe when I hear people talking about trimming their NATO so the don't have to fold it, because I have to spend extra for the longer 11.5" version, just to get the tip to barely make it to the second loop. Then they are still short on the top side, so the buckle sits on the side of my wrist. I am always scrounging for obsolete, antique links for my watches to make them fit. The most fun trying to find are the old gold and gold filled chains. I even add extra sections to those old twist-o-flexes everyone seems to hate, just because there is nothing else to use for some watches, sometimes. They made those ones that are not so flexible near the endlinks (top of the wrist) for people like me, so that the bands don't gap open all the way around. Hell, I say, if you love a watch, wear it. It doesn't matter what size it is. And if you don't love it, sell it to somebody who will love it and wear it... ... like me.

UN is making a limited camo dial Maxi Marine
POTR replied to section8's topic in Other Watch Reviews
It would improve the looks if it even had a proper woodland pattern, instead of that discount kids store camo crap... -

Ok, some have probably seen or heard of my amazing beater Invicta Mako... I wear it almost every day when I am working as a chassis mechanic... The days when I wear something else, it is usually bad for the something else... my Gen TT Sub was damaged when welding (yeah, I know...), one of my old Sheffield's seals weren't up to handling brake cleaner (fun little one jewel)... and sometimes even intentionally hazardous for watches (that China "Musk-mariner" is still running strong, with a new caseback, btw...) anyway... the job got the better of the original Invicta bracelet a little while back (for a while it was making due with some welding wire for a pin, then another one, grit from grinding, welding spall, etc..) so I put it on a NATO for a while... of course the chemicals, grit, etc... have killed the NATO in short order, so... I decided to put this sweet little beater on a band it deserved for working so hard for me... an SEL Rolex Oyster Bracelet... Close up... At work... Break time... (that's my little green Mountaineer waiting to take me home in the background...)

What does hubby do? Could the watch have been exposed to high magnetic fields? (ie: welding, test equipment or degauss equip?) If so, the hairspring could be magnetized...
-
Not only is it fake, it's a rather nasty looking fake. I really like the HUGE Units Per Hour on the rotating bezel and the complete lack of center sweep seconds hand... the brassy looking gold plate really accentuates the wokkiness of the rehaut as well... the dial is surprisingly good save the same brassiness to the slightly too-wide spaced sub dials...
-
Maybe a mid-size Rollie or Tudor?
-
For Kenberg 3.0 (codename: Watarrka) I'd like to see a larger range of sizes... er... wait, wasn't this about the forum? For RWG... Um... I don't know... looks pretty good. May not need to tack on anything else... sometimes, less is more. Of course, if you need any flash, or assistance with code, gibb0r a call...

Start-Of-The-Week Wristcheck (10-11 Dec 2007)

Wow Gio, I really like that dial... where did you get this? Other than indices at 3, 9 and 10 being a little off, and the slight variation with the sub dials being a little rough (font big, touching at tops, finish off), nothing really bothers me about that dial.

Are you a 'classic' watch person, or a 'modern' enthusiast?
POTR replied to mezzanine's topic in General Discussion
If it is at least as old as I am, I love it. Modern watches that keep to classic features are on my list as well. I also like big watches, because they actually look "normal-sized" on me, but I don't go overboard chasing them, not going to buy big just for the sake of buying big. -
Hell, just post pics of it here, I am sure 20 or so "snot-nosed repists" will tell you what is wrong with it in just as much of a hurry...

Your bezel looks much better in the new photos... UPH still looks a hair outlying, but all else, otherwise sharp. Still a bit "chrome." Again, Very nice.
