PeteM Posted October 2, 2011 Report Posted October 2, 2011 I have seen more and more uses of the term..."Hmmm" in posts.... and even in some PMs I had from one member a while back I must say I find it annoying if directed at myself as I see it as a P*ss Take of my comments... but is that just me ? If someone said that to me in a conversation in response to anything I am saying then I would consider that person was casting aspersions on what I said.. or implying there was something suspicious about it.. What do you guys think ? Is it a sarcastic or derogatory way of replying? Or am I totally misunderstanding its meaning in a forum context or indeed generally..
Utheman Posted October 2, 2011 Report Posted October 2, 2011 Hmmm... let me think about it. In general, that's what I think it usually means. It totally depends on the context, however.
Jkay Posted October 2, 2011 Report Posted October 2, 2011 If someone said that to me in a conversation in response to anything I am saying then I would consider that person was casting aspersions on what I said.. or implying there was something suspicious about it.. Perhaps the information you gave them is making them re-consider their own opinion .. that would be Hmmmm too.
Nanuq Posted October 2, 2011 Report Posted October 2, 2011 When I use it (all the time) it means "Huh. Wow. Let me think about that for a minute." Shorthand: HWLMTATFAM
vlydog Posted October 2, 2011 Report Posted October 2, 2011 In your case, it means it's time for a pushbike.
PeteM Posted October 2, 2011 Author Report Posted October 2, 2011 Thanks guys.... at least the replies make me laugh
mastrmindalliance Posted October 2, 2011 Report Posted October 2, 2011 To me "hmmmm" means suspicious, like a suspicious sigh (like 'i'm not sure, that sounds dodgy' or 'bullplop'). I'd use, "ummmmm" for 'thinking about it for a moment'. Then you've got "erm", "hmpht" (harrumph), and "pfft" (no explanation required) and "eeeengkt" ('incorrect' buzzer from games shows).
maxman Posted October 2, 2011 Report Posted October 2, 2011 Just a pause In thought or thinking Imo....kind of like this No big deal...I wouldnt think. Now go [censored] off mate Mike
sly Posted October 2, 2011 Report Posted October 2, 2011 Hmmmm, My own 2 cents is not agreeing on what you are trying to show or say. I mostly see this on threads like "check out my new Gen. Dial I just bought"
HartDoc Posted October 2, 2011 Report Posted October 2, 2011 I use hmmmm as in interesting.... let me chew on it for a bit.
hackR Posted October 2, 2011 Report Posted October 2, 2011 Just a pause In thought or thinking Imo....kind of like this No big deal...I wouldnt think. Now go [censored] off mate Mike +1
modelizer Posted October 2, 2011 Report Posted October 2, 2011 Just a pause In thought or thinking Imo....kind of like this No big deal...I wouldnt think. +2
lhooq Posted October 2, 2011 Report Posted October 2, 2011 Hmm... Meaning: I express incredulity and cast aspersions at the OP's premise, which is too uninteresting to deserve a cogent response. Surely, the thin-skinned PeteM is leaving himself open to mockery. HMMM!!! (Personally, I'm more annoyed by the lazy "popcorn" emoticon, though that's not a problem on this forum.)
TeeJay Posted October 2, 2011 Report Posted October 2, 2011 Yeah, just a pause in thought for me as well
Samurai Posted October 2, 2011 Report Posted October 2, 2011 Contextual ... Mostly means I am pondering over something.
txrob779 Posted October 2, 2011 Report Posted October 2, 2011 I use it too, but what burns my ass like a flame 3 foot high is the use of "really" or "seriously" man that just drives me hmmmmm CRAZY.
KB Posted October 2, 2011 Report Posted October 2, 2011 I use it too, but what burns my ass like a flame 3 foot high is the use of "really" or "seriously" man that just drives me hmmmmm CRAZY. Really? Hmmmm let me think about that. Ken
AsiadeCuba Posted October 3, 2011 Report Posted October 3, 2011 hmmm means to that someone is in deep in thought or thinking a bs explaination
maxman Posted October 3, 2011 Report Posted October 3, 2011 I use it too, but what burns my ass like a flame 3 foot high is the use of "really" or "seriously" man that just drives me hmmmmm CRAZY. Seriously?? hmmmmmmmmm
Watchmeister Posted October 3, 2011 Report Posted October 3, 2011 No idea what it means. That is why I use the "hmmm" smiley all the time. It means....you figure it out because I haven't.
