John Kerry is married to Teresa Heinz, heiress to the Heinz ketchup fortune. He races expensive sailboats for a hobby. I'll go out on a limb and say he can afford and probably possesses far more expensive watches than what we see here. In his role as a public servant, it's best to be understated.

Well good for him, some some political figures just aren't into watches. He does ride a $5000 custom bike though.

It irks me that Bill Clinton gets up on a podium and blather on about the world's hunger problems while wearing a platinum Rolex.

Oligarchy aren't that stupid. They're always a few steps ahead in the marketing game.

British Royal family is a good example. They actually have several PR teams between them working around the clock. In House too!

Us plebs are easily placated ;)

Well... I don't really see the point of not appearing with a luxury watch (in the 5/20k range).

They earn quite a lot for their job so what's the point into fake normality? It's not that if they have 10$ plastic watch they therefore get less money from people taxes...

Hank Paulson, the former CEO of Goldman Sachs and then Treasury Secretary wore a G-Shock. The guy had more money than God himself and didn't care about that. Many people don't care about watches. We do, so we just assume everyone else does, too, but just because they have money doesn't mean they care about watches. Why would you want a watch, anyway, when your smart phone keeps much better time and is more convenient?
