There are wrists of all sizes here , in fact the bigger wrists often have a hard time getting extra links! Personally, I wouldn't stress on either size PO. I have, err, 4! Good reps will last but I will caution you that reps are really a game of percentages; you absolutely WILL have problems sooner or later. And that counts for gens too, just the percentages are better. There is nothing to fear from the Asian 21J movement either - apart from anything else, if it conked out it's very cheap to replace. Going for ETA just for longevity's sake can occasionally be a false economy. That said, the ETA movement is of course better - and for many watches, the same movement as the gen. If you read and read, you'll not go far wrong. You've already picked out some cracking watches!

You'll do fine with both the 42mm and the 45mm UPO. It's all a matter of perspective - I worried about the size and went for the 42mm (which is a great watch in it's own right BTW), but then I realized that the 45 mm was no bother either. The IWC choices are fantastic - let's face it , you're going to need more than one watch! There are so many choices with them. My favourite watch of all is the Ingy in my sig. But there are so many impressive models. Welcome - and best of luck!

The size is a big reason why it's not popular. It's only 37.5mm. I don't know if Asian 21J versions of this rep exist, but if they do, that's what I'd go for. Gold plated are a little less popular with rep buyers since the plating is often suspect, stainless steel is a better bet long term. That said, there are many gold enthusiasts on the forum who have some great input on the subject (including ways to protect the plating).

You need more arms!! GREAT collection!! What about a watch with something interesting about the movement? A skeleton or Homer's tourbillon? Just something a little 'different', you have so many great watches already....just one suggestion for the pile.

The Portuguese is a stunning watch. Sadly there is a problem with the reps of this watch because it's a 'seconds at six' I believe. To get the seconds sub-dial down into that position they added some extra gears to the movement and it's more than the movement can take. Some folk have had no problems with it; but enough folk have to say you're taking a risk. Recently there have been some sales of watches where owners have 'frozen' the seconds sub-dial, which solves the problem (but of course then the seconds sub-dial doesn't work). The 3717 is a tremendous watch - both gen and rep. A gen shot

You might not be in the mood for another Canon, but I got a new camera a few months ago and went for a Canon HV20. It's high definition, and records onto regular MiniDV tapes. Great picture quality (the reviews are very good for this), build quality is more 'plasticky' than the likes of Sony or JVC, but then it has a good price point. Cheap batteries too. I didn't go for a hard disk camcorder for a couple of reasons. (1) Where to store all the data? I'd need a new hard drive every few months - tapes are possibly easier to store than a pile of external hard drives. (2) Data rates - hard drives can't move the data fast enough in high definition. Now all HDV cameras compress the data like jpgs do with photos, but the hard drive HD camcorders have to compress it more = they don't have the same picture quality. Anyway - I was very happy with it for the price I got it for.

Here it's US$1.45 a litre; that's $5.50 per US gallon, $6.60 for a UK gallon. That's for crap fuel too (below UK regular octane); decent cars need 'premium'. It fluctuates during the week, today is a cheap day. It will probably spike another 15% later in the week. But I'd take these prices over the UK any day of the week. When I last went back, I thought there was a hole in the bottom of the fuel tank when the bowser hit 60 pounds (US$125 at current exchange rates)

Great wrist shot! You can check out Pugwash's photography sub-forum here: http://www.rwg.cc/members/index.php?showforum=166 He has some great tutorials. And have a look for some of TTK's photos - a good deal of his photos are better than the ones the real brands take, they're that amazing.

Whoa! Really fantastic shots... Brilliant!

I have seen both sizes in the AD as well; I liked the big one (the one I saw was black), although the window display wasn't flattering to it I think. The wee one with the mesh band wasn't my style at all (this was the bronze one). Narikaa has had the first reps of the black big size already, although they were quartz (still, decent-looking watches in their own right in the big scheme of things).

I think this one belongs in Kenburg's "suit shot" thread instead....

I believe like the Burj Al Arab in Dubai, Admin is preparing for RWG's first 7 star thread.... Okay, I might have made that up and I have no idea!

Interesting - I hadn't thought of that.

I suspect that in a way the iPhone is a little like mechanical vs quartz; if you want a strictly functional phone there are probably better options out there, but the iPhone is perhaps a little more fun, with a bit more soul. The browsing is incredible - I was very impressed. But then, that was on the significantly cheaper iPod. Why no flash incidentally? [CPU?]

Tokyo is such a riot - absolutely one of my favourite places on the planet.

Congrats! It's amazing how many of the original TRC members are still on the scene (both there and here).

In Australia, the cats only get the one life, then they're lunch! http://www.cairnspost.com.au/article/2007/.../4480_news.html Python makes a meal out of cat 08Nov07 Meet the SNAKE that got the cream ... or the cat in this case. Redlynch resident January Clay got the shock of her life when she saw her fully-grown cat disappearing down the throat of the 3m python. She had let the cat outside about 5.30am on Wednesday morning and when she went to check on it 30 minutes later made the gruesome discovery. "When I came out of the house the cat's legs were hanging out of its mouth," she told The Cairns Post yesterday. "I knew there were snakes about, but I never expected one to come into my yard." Ms Clay only moved to Redlynch four months ago and had not seen a snake in the outdoor area before. Despite her sadness at seeing her five-year-old pet killed by the python, she was not upset at the snake. It's just nature, he was just doing what he normally does. My cat was in the wrong place at the wrong time." The python eventually left of its own accord. Ms Clay's attitude is in stark contrast with some other Cairns residents, who have recently played a role in bludgeoning several native species including pythons and a crocodile to death.

What a great question! I found this online (etymonline.com), although it doesn't give its source for the bit we're interested in (OED? Perhaps the OED might have a fuller answer.) The wake link would be the Anglo-Saxon w -
