  1. Phong and his son do that sort of work.
  2. I guess the only healthy way to look at it is that the silly rich people who often don't pay as much tax as they should, have through their vanity, financed the growth of plastic surgery to the point where the most horrific injuries and deformities can now be repaired.
  3. Well welcome onboard. Seems like you will fit right in.
  4. Neither am I, but I'm guessing the colour of the markings on the bezel insert and the hole in the centre of the hand pinion are at least two of the tells. Also I understand the rep hulk dial isn't quite the same as any genuine hulk and is more similar to the genuine black dial. That level of detail is still a little beyond me.
  5. Due to the nature of this hobby we are all likely to get scammed at some point. Here is a wild idea, if we all chuck in a Dollar or whatever and form our own insurance. If you pay you are covered. Mods decision final?
  6. I would say the widest availability of secondhand models is in the US and prices do seem better than Europe. How is the Hong Kong second hand and vintage market? I'm hoping to travel in Asia in the near future.
  7. It's an interesting idea and I would love to know the answer. I had always kind of figured the UAE would likely be the cheapest.
  8. Now we have a name a shame maybe we should have a name and credit.
  9. Horses for courses really. I have three sets of calibrated and certified digital calipers for work, but we still use Verniers for precision stuff.
  10. Welcome. Bad English s tolerated here. You should hear my Italian.
  11. Welcome. Enjoy your time here and don't be afraid to join in, we were all new once.
  12. 63 views and no response. I'm sorry, that's not a very accurate reflection of the community here. Anyway welcome.
  13. Welcome. I'm also English, though I haven't lived there since Adam was a boy. I hope you enjoy your time here and look forward to seeing you active in the community.
  14. Hi Nils, Welcome to the forum. You will find us very international here among other things. I am English, living mostly in Ireland and frequently travelling through Europe.
  15. Well I wasn't saying your idea was in any way wrong and in the end you are free to do as you like. I admit I have spare parts in my watch drawers, just in case. My only point was that none chronograph movements aren't really that unreliable apart from the dreaded s3135. I tend to maintain my cars well and carry out a lot of preventative maintenance. On the other hand I have always had a policy of running the light bulbs in my house to failure. :-)
  16. This isn't anything more than an anecdote, but my oldest four reps are about fifteen years old. In that time I have never had a rep refuse to tick while my omega has had three breakdowns and my Rolex one. Not really casting any doubts on the quality of genuine watches, but reps without complications aren't that unreliable. Buying a whole new movement, dial and hands is pretty much guaranteed under Sod's law to mean it is never needed.
  17. I remember seeing your request for information and delighted it work out so well for you. The watch is a beauty, enjoy it. I look forward to reading your posts and getting to know you.
  18. Welcome to the forum. In my view V7 has minor but worthwhile improvements. However it is your opinion that counts. Sometimes new members find this advice hard to take, but do a search and read the relevant threads on the V7. Consider the opinions put forward and form your own opinion.
  19. Very happy to see continued development and improvement. I have a feeling these will end up cult collector's pieces in time. They are a part of our hobbies history.
  20. I don't know if the ETA and miyota cases are the same, but definitely the movements do not have the same stem height. There are possible work a rounds for the more talented watch smiths, but I think most are compromises at best. Ideally stem height and case should be carefully matched. Also since stem height affects crown (or winder) height it can be a small tell if the crown is too high or too low on the case side. Miyotas are tough workhorse movements with a bare minimum of finishing. 2824 is a work horse ETA movement and should last more than one lifetime with a little care and servicing now and then. The Chinese clone 2824 is a little less in quality of materials and finish, but still a very respectable movement. The 2892 is I think the movement in the genuine watch, so if it is in budget it may well be a very good idea to get that. However as @kernow Said a Swiss movement in a rep watch is likely to be a used movement or two cobbled together with some Chinese parts. Better to go for an honest Chinese movement and maybe upgrade to a known quantity Swiss movement at a later date. I think I remember Ssteel fitted a 2892 in an omega rep with a Chinese 2824 for @kernow. There is some similarity in the two, but 2892 is a finer movement.
  21. Welcome back. Speak to admin and you might be able to revive your name and post count.
  22. Real or fake, It's the reason you buy and wear it that tells about the person. Plenty of people both sides of the fence just love watches. Many own both. Some on both side of the real fake fence only wear a watch to try and boost their image. Such people are definitely a little insecure.
  23. I have a few miyotas in watches reps and otherwise. I find them pretty reliable and yes it should be expected to last longer than a year, but nothing guaranteed in this game. The good news is that a replacement miyota movement is much cheaper than servicing a movement. In case of failure, buy a brand new movement, install and enjoy. Alternatively an ETA could be fitted. I don't have my little cheat book to hand, but I believe a 2873 is the same dimensions and importantly stem height as the miyota.
