Rolex 6265 - The Cartel Daytona revised

Recommended Posts

Posted
A few years ago I owned a DW Mystery Movement 6263 of the first generation.
I really loved it!

Unfortunately it broke a year after I've bought it and I was never able to get it repaired.

Since I'm not willing to drop $$$ on a V72 I had to look for other options.
Chi did a review on how to modify the ST-19 to accept a gen size dial, so I started to look into it further.
Rolojack did great mods to a 6238 too.

So I did the following to the Cartel 6263:

- slimmed down the mid-case
- slimmed the Cartel hands as they are too wide
- modified the case to accept a DW bezel
- retapped the case to accept a 702 tube
- retapped the case to accept DW's pusher
- modified the pushers to reach the ST-19 movement
- modified the movement to accept the DW dial
- modified the bezel to fit genuine tropic
- install a genuine coronet on the dial
- install a genuine 702 crown
- install a genuine 7836 bracelet
- install a genuine T21

So there it is:

There's nothing I love more then when guys here take something fairly cheap and crappy and transform it. This is right up there in the hall of fame of such transformations. Fantastic work!

A pleasure to see such great results, on a budget basis!

If only the DW parts were abailable through other trusted dealers, it would habe been great for such builds.

Congratulations !!!! I'm doing a similar job right now and it is not an easy task at all !!!! Mostly if you don't like unproperly done mods such as poor drillings and glued stuff.... About my 6238, it is now dismanteled as I'll have the mid case modified again : pushers holes welded, and reopened with the correct size as is was originally made for screw down pushers.... It that goes well, I'll share my experience !

Thanks a bunch for the compliments!

I really think that with the right parts and a lot of work - the Cartel case can be a viable option for those who don't want to break the bank.

I mean - it's still not a cheap build though

Congratulations, it's a great looking watch I have a question about when you say you 'slimmed down the mid case case' can you go into any more detail in what exactly you did please? Cheers! Edited by SuperDanX

Hrmm. I got a cartel 6265 on the way. Was thinking of modding it. I was just gonna put a 702 crown in it but this looks fantastic!

What all do you have to do to get a dw bezel on there and how did you slim the small hands?

Great work

And anyone know where I can get a acrylic bezel? The one I bought is coming with a steel bezel and I'd much rather have the acrylic. :)

There is a guy on Ebay watchNY who sells 6263 bezels that are much better than the old DW bezel.

Akira, that is a beautiful job, basically you took a bucket full of lemons and made some delicious lemonade!! Well done sir.

Fore the life of me. I cannot figure out why someone hasn't been able to source the "DW Daytonas". I doubt that DW was building them himself, so out  there somewhere is a manufacturer that builds those nice Daytonas, looking for a sales person to peddle his watches!!

As this post is already a couple of months old, I did not expect the new spark of interest

Must be all those Daytona threads that were coming up recently...

Thanks for the compliments folks. It's a piece of work, but well worth it in the end - considering what V72's go for these days.

I hope to complete the 6239 black dial and 6264 PN this year.

Next year I will build the 6240 black dial for myself.

Pretty much re-machining the bezel lip. The hands have been slimmed with a jewelers file by hand. Difficult to explain - steady hands and good eyes...
