What about kobolds? When I was thinking of buying one of these a while back they went on and on how water proof their straps are even for saltwater. I'm not sure which category they would fall into. Even if they are I think these are 22mm, so might not work for pams.

Sounds like he had a bit of cognitive dissonance. The idea that we like to keep our beliefs and behaviors consistent and when they are not, we feel tension and will do anything to bring things back to consistency. He already bought the watch and you can’t undo that. If he admitted anything you were saying, he would have to admit doing something foolish. Of course, none of us think we are a fool, so he retained this image by rejecting everything you were saying. Still,,,interesting example

Vintagizing A "california Dial" 3646 - Some Techniques
chris5264 replied to leitztozeiss's topic in The Panerai Area
This is one of the reasons I really like this forum. No one would ever experiment with a gen panerai. I think it turned out great. While WM's watches that go for a grand may be a bit nicer (perhaps?), some of these are serious competion. Looking forward to the 6152. -
Doesn't look real to me,,,,,,,,and please stop calling me Surely.

Will There Ever Be Reps Of Watches Like This .....
chris5264 replied to Perfectionist's topic in General Discussion
I don't know. What if someone asked ten years ago if a tourbillon would have a rep? -
Panerai Casebacks, Crown Guards And Lugs. Comparison
chris5264 replied to V's topic in Rep vs. Genuine
Here is a pic of a gen 111h which I no longer have. I hope this gives you an idea of what I mean, it is just one of those little things that I really liked about the gen CG and I've never seen it in any rep, ever. -
Panerai Casebacks, Crown Guards And Lugs. Comparison
chris5264 replied to V's topic in Rep vs. Genuine
Anyway you can take a pic of how the gen CG gets larger as it moves away from the case whereas the rep is all one thickness? I thought this was the coolest part of the gen CG, thick, but thinner at the case so you can still wind it with ease. -
Does Anyone Ever Use The Chat Function Here?
chris5264 replied to ubiquitous's topic in General Discussion
I've had a few chats with other people, but most of the time I end up by myself. We could have a specific time to chat like the paneristi have... -
I used to take my pams off just because it was raining and put it in my pocket. No more of that for me. Try it,,,,,it is very cool not worring about it any more. In fact, I'm off to the pool today with my daughter and taking along davidsen's mm20.

Ok Guys: What's On Your Wrist This Monday?
chris5264 replied to By-Tor's topic in General Discussion
Nice pics of the monster, I liked that watch so much I bought it twice, but sold it each time because I couldn't deal with the lask of manual winding. If you can live with that, best watch deal out there for the money. -
pm sent........thanks

I am in for this. My 3436 needs a good crystal.

For what it is worth, I'll add that I've had almost all of my pam reps apart, checked the o rings and used silicone grease, made sure everything was tight (in particular the CG) and still avoided water until this summer when I decided to start being empirical. In the last few months I've had my pam reps in a lot of water without a single problem. Of course this is probably only a meter or so but I don't dive so serious depth is not an issue for me. It a bigger problem finding good waterproof straps.

I don't understand, just putting "AP concept" seems so general I can't imagine anyone could figure out what it means. I always leave that area blank just to be safe but could putting something so general also be a problem?
-
Congrats and nice pictures. In a few months you'll get a hat in the mail. I just got mine today from a watch bought in march. No big deal but nice to get mail from panerai. Someone here has a quote that sums it up very well.....I like my reps but love my gens.

I would be interested in both the crystal and the dial. However, I would also really like a good crystal for my vintage with cal dial. Perhaps enough will respond to make it a workable project.

Still working on the Davidsen's mm20, I've been so into it I ordered another all polished version
-
In a sense you can overwind. I tested this with a few very old movements and each time the stem broke before anything else was affected. However, I had to put significant pressure to break the stems. no sane person would ever wind a watch like that.
-
My exact thoughts with this. The blue hands will definately come off and be replaced with gold. I will also fix the pin and perhaps keep the dial overnight in some motor oil. This should really be a step up from the 1938a, which is around 600 USD used. Mostly because of the size being 47mm as opposed to the 1938 which is only 45.

Congrats,,,that is a totally cool watch. While I'm still very pro rep I've been in need of a few gens in my collection. This would be one to really consider. Simple, and with strap changes can be a dozen different watches. Did you buy used or new?

That movement is sooooo close, if they could just get the font thinner and smaller for the "officine panerai" it would be perfect.

Do Any Of Your Friends Think You've Lost It?
chris5264 replied to deltatahoe's topic in General Discussion
This is very common for me, I can't recall a single time ever when I told someone about my hobby and got a positive response. Of course, my wife thinks I'm crazy too. This is why the “get togethers” are such a cool thing. About a month or so ago a few of us rep freaks met in cleveland for a few drinks. There is really nothing as cool, unusual and strange (in a good way) as talking about watches with others that are as pathologically addicted as yourself. I highly recommend it. -
Nice, crown guard looks good. How is the lum? althought the hands are always great, I've found that Davidsen's dials vary on the quality of lum.

I'm sorry to hear about this, my deepest sympathies. I had something very similar happen almost 20 years ago. If I could go back, the one thing I would have changed would have been to see a psychologist for a while after this event. If for any reason, to unload all the anger these types of mindless events generate. Just something to think about…

One thing about the gen crown guard that is simply good design, and something I've never seen on a rep is how the crown guard gets larger (thicker) as it moves away from the case. This is nice because it exposes more of the crown and makes for easier winding. Hopefully, we will see a good one in the future.
