Whats a reasonably sized rep collection?
deltatahoe replied to DemonSlayer's topic in General Discussion
this is definitely an interesting question. kruzer summed it up well -- i think most members' collections change over time based on their experience collecting watches, combined with ever-changing tastes and interests. as for me, i like having variety to choose from -- different watches for different types of events, experiences, work days, travels, etc. while sometimes wearing a genuine watch is most appropriate (important work meetings, formal occasions, etc), it is nice to have a variety of reps to fill out the selection for everyday wear. my criteria for keeping a watch is pretty simple -- if i really like the look & feel of a watch, i'll keep it -- even if i don't wear it all the time. as long as i enjoy wearing the watch when it makes it onto my wrist, it will have place in my collection. i definitely have watches that get less wrist time, but for most of these watches, i'd feel strange if they weren't in my collection (a perfect example is the old-factory omega moon watch). just my $0.02 of course deltatahoe -

the watch boys don't have this reddish color, but they do have a nice honey brown color that matches your the color of your belt.... you can find them on ebay here... deltatahoe

@ cornerstone, too funny -
great idea stephane -- it's fun to revisit some of these old threads, and as you've said ubi is a perfect member to use as an example of what is great about RWG. let's all strive to make some positive contributions to the board in the next days deltatahoe ps, man ubi's 1665 is a beauty

if you want to get really technical, the size of the "L SWISS MADE L" text is too large on the rep (in addition to being too close to the 6). deltatahoe

i'll cast my vote for the jlc as well. i initially fell for the squadra reverso hometime that stephane suggested above, but after trying one on the bigger square squadra line feels too large on the wrist for a dress watch. additionally, the reverso line is known for their rectangular designs; i figure when buying a classic watch like this, it's better to stick to the original design (i can see the square squadra designs coming & going, whereas the classic rectangular reverso case will likely stand the test of time). if you like having choices, the jlc reverso grande gmt has the most complications & the choice of silver or black dial: personally, i'm not a huge fan of the black dial, so i like the reverso grande date a little better (i like how you get to see the double barrel movement) just my $0.02 of course deltatahoe

@V, i just noticed something from one of your pictures of the strap -- have you started doing something different (possibly shaving down the leather on the inside) at the fold of the strap at the lugs (ie. where the tubes will/would go in)? the strap looks "flatter" at the lug end to me (as if there is less material there) than some of your earlier straps or am i just over-analyzing things? deltatahoe

here's an interesting trivia question for you: which RWG member is that picture from? deltatahoe

it's funny you posted about this today V -- i had purchased a simona vachetta strap a couple weeks ago and it literally showed up in the mail today. both straps (yours & simona's) are beautiful -- this lighter colored tan isn't found in many straps & is just for comparison purposes, here is the simona: i think you did a great job of picking out a similar hide -- they are very similar in color. now you just need to make some "scrape" marks on the leather, misalign your hole punches & yours will be spot-on deltatahoe

look great kostas -- imho, this one probably tops the list of the many straps you've posted lately wear it well deltatahoe

correct me if i'm wrong, but i'm pretty sure the exploding crystal problem was with non-DSN sapphire crystals for 47mm fiddys i'm also pretty certain that sapphire crystals were never made for any versions of the the mini-fiddy (that is if there are multiple versions, which i doubt to be the case). i think your observation re: the low likelihood of having a sapphire crystal on a $150 watch (these days) was spot on. so, i think it's safe to say that you shouldn't have any concerns about your crystal exploding, and interestingly enough, you probably just increased the scratch resistance of your crystal by having it AR coated by jakub's coater. congrats on getting your project completed -- the results look great btw, i've got a similar (albeit a little different) project in the works at the moment as well deltatahoe

wow that dome shot is incredible deltatahoe

congrats doubleT as others have said, it's an incredible number when you consider the quality of the content. btw, i agree with cornerstone -- shouldn't there be an asshat salute of some kind? deltatahoe

ummm.....this is maybe stating the obvious, but you just can't "order" a 1665 insert -- these are vintage parts that are not easy to come by.....take a look at recently closed ebay auctions for vintage inserts (with acryllic tritium pearls) -- these things are going for ~$400 recently..... just to be clear, this is what a genuine rolex vintage acryllic tritium pearl should look like: hope this helps, deltatahoe
