  1. Oops, apologies. "Al" stands for Aluminium here.

And -- double apologies -- I see I wrote "few" Al while I wanted to write either "much" Al or "few" Ti (Titanium).

Aluminium (Al), Titanium (Ti), and Nytrogen (N) are the elements used in our watch PVD.

The more Al over Ti, the darker the PVD tone (and the softer the PVD coat, IMHO -- but not very softer).

When there is much Al you will hear of AlTiN, otherwise TiAlN.

Al being less expensive than Ti, inexpensive PVD reps are usually made with AlTiN. Hence, they are also pretty dark.

Great info. Thanks. Now I'm going to Google and check out how the whole PVD process works.

    Thanks again.

  2. A nice watch, indeed! Congrats!

On the pics I would not say it's painted. To me, it looks real PVD -- just not beadblasted in advance, and most likely with few Al.

SSS, I think you are correct, but what's Al? Is that something that has to do with the PVD process?

  3. I got it yesterday. It's not very accurate. It's too black, too shiny, the crystal is too domed, the bezel angles right into the crystal with no flat portion at the top, the CG is too thin (top to bottom), it's brushed instead of bead blasted...And I think it's cool as HELL!! I can't get myself to take it off!!

Now I really want to either buy a nice PVD case or have a SS case bead blasted and PVD'd.

The fit and finish is actually pretty good. I bought this for the dagger swan neck movement which I already pulled out. I'm using the movement for a 111 project. I replaced it in this watch with a standard asian 6497 that had a nice sandwich dial mounted. I may actually use this dial on the 111. I also added a Hirsch Liberty strap I had laying around. It's a little darker than I'd like for PVD, but it's 24/22 so I could use the PVD thumbnail buckle the watch came with. I like the look so much, I actually ordered a lighter honey Liberty strap for it.

  4. The cup itself has had a colourful history. It has been lost, misplaced and stolen (once from its home in the Hockey Hall of Fame and Museum).

In 1924, Montreal Canadiens players were on their way to a victory party at owner Leo Dandurand's house. The players had set the Cup on the sidewalk snowbank while they changed a flat tire. When arrived at Dandurand's house, they realized they had left the Cup on the sidewalk. They hurriedly drove back, and were relieved to see the silver bowl sitting right where they left it, completely untouched.

Two other times the Cup was lost. In 1907, the Montreal Wanderers left the Cup at the home of a photographer they hired to immortalize their victory. The photographer's mother turned it into a flower pot for the next several months. In 1905, drunken members of the Ottawa Silver Seven thought it would a good celebratory idea to punt the Cup into the Rideau Canal. No one rescued it out of the chilly waters until the next day.

Victors of the Cup have used it to baptize their children. Two players (the New York Islanders' Clark Gillies and the Anaheim Ducks' Sean O'Donnell) even allowed their dogs to eat out of the Cup.

You forgot one Smitty. When the Avs won the cup in 95-96, Adam Deadmarsh became the only player to have his name misspelled on the cup (It was spelled Deadmarch). The error was later corrected.

  5. Yeah,, ok... those are fighting words!

I'll try to get a wrist shot with it. I've been to several parties at restaurants that the players own here in Michigan.

yeah.... I've touched it! lol ;)

Sorry Daytona, but here in Colorado, we aren't allowed to say the RW word without following it up with "SUCK" :D It's the law...

...And, if them's fightin' words, fine...How about you be Osgood and I'll be Saint Patty (Roy) :boxing:(No, you can't be Vernon.)

BTW, I too got to touch the cup...in 2001.

OK...Congrats, but if you tell anyone I said that, I'll deny it!! And, as always, Red Wings SUCK!!

  6. mj, did you really just say that  , I have to look again?! He has no reason to be annoyed, he probably sent those two out to other customers who may or may not return them. It's this attitude that's allowed him to do this....until now. Hell, there are those who aren't bothered by the case notch, the case notch? It's a hole in your case that doesen't belong there .... but that's fine. You did the right thing by not accepting the watch, buy a different 104 and be happy with it.

    You're absolutely right Jay.

Sometimes I remind myself of a spoiled little kid and if I want something, I WANT IT!! If that means coddling someone who shouldn't be coddled in order to get what I want (in this instance a decent PVD case) even if it is not for the greater good. I know what I should do is not give him my business until he makes a commitment to step up QC. So, that's what I'll do.

    Thanks for setting me straight.

I guess I can always look for a source to bead blast and PVD my existing case.

  7. Since this thread seems to be staying alive, I thought I'd give an update.

I actually used this strategy last week and attempted to purchase a 104 from David. I sent him an email and told him I was interested in buying one of his 104s and asked him to send me a few pix of the watch he was going to send so I could check it out. He was very accomidating and sent me a series of shots of a watch that looked nice, but had some issues with the lume on the 9 o'clock subdial. It looked like the lume on the markers was maybe applied too thick and ran (or bled) a bit. I pointed this out and he agreed to send pix of another watch.

The second set of pix arrived the next day. This one still had a bit of the lume issue (not nearly as bad though) and I would have taken it, but there was a chunck of paint missing from the word LUMINOR on the bottom of the M. So, once again, I pointed this out and asked for another set of pix. David said he would send the the next day, but he sent nothing. It has been about 5 or 6 days now without a word from him.

I was kind of disappointed by the experience and have not persued the matter further.

I had decided use the funds I had allocated for the 104 to build a 111. The first thing I did was order an homage with a nice dagger movement off the bay. I figured I'd use the movement and hands from this watch. The watch I bought is supposed to be PVD (but might actually be paint) and now I'm thinking of a project 203a or some other PVD watch. I'll have to see what I think of a black PAM once my purchase arrives. I also bought a Trusty 111h w/Asian movement for the case and dial, which should arrive at the end of the week.

Now for the real dilemma...If I decide to build a PVD watch, I guess I'll have to try a case from DSN since he seems to have the only decent PVD case. But now I'm afraid he's annoyed with me and won't give me the time of day...Oh well, I guess we'll see.

  8. It does matter. Most pins come with an end larger than the other end.

If one pin end / hole looks smaller than the other one, push from that end.

Else push gently from the CG down. If the pin does not move at all, then try gently as well from the CG up. If it does not move yet, then push again from the down by applying a little more pressure, and so on. Odds are that the pin will come out from down to up, but not necessarily.

    Thank you Sir.

  9. I have a couple of these in my parts bin.. which is kinda where they belong along with 99% of these other "rep pvd" cases. The case itself is not bad, but the shiney black finish IMO is totally unacceptable. I've tried buffing it up with cape cod cloth or sanding it down but nothing really helps.

    Thanks lolo.

That's kind of what I suspected. I basically bought it as a parts watch anyway. Just curious though, is it real PVD or is it paint or something else?

  10. Your best bet is to source a movement from the bay, and everything else from DSN. His PVD is superior to what you can find on ebay because he bead blasts his cases before the PVD treatment.

    Thanks Red.

I bought it mainly for the dagger swan neck movement which I'll use for a 111 project I'm putting together. But since I don't have a PVD case, I decided to go for this (I got a pretty good price) thinking that if the case sucks, so be it, at least I got the movement. I know about DSNs PVD. I'll probably buy a case from him at some point.

I was just wondering if anyone was familiar with this particular case and what the quality might be. I guess I'll find out soon enough.

  11. nice find there! but are you sure these are from panerai? i have no idea from blueprints but there are no diameter measurements and fonts are wrong

I'm not sure if they are or aren't from Panerai, and it's been a while since I've studied mechanical drawing, but take a look at the full size drawings, I believe all the numbered arrows reference other drawings in the set. One of the other drawings would have the dimensions.

  12. @ mjmurphy.

Also, where's the 104 from? That CG looks great.

It's Trusty's best. I love the CGs and the Crystal. It has nice date mag. The only thing I really hate about this watch is the seconds subdial. It isn't recessed like the gen. Instead, it has many concentric circles machined into it to give the illusion that it is recessed.

I plan on ordering DSNs 104 next week and seeing If I can combine parts of both to make one watch.

  13. Well, I am still thinking of it..

I might get a nice cleaner large scale one and not one so gnarly and boney because it has cleaner straighter stitching and less crooked holes.

    We'll see :)

I just got a nice clean one a couple of weeks ago. No I want one that looks wicked and nasty.

    My newest:

  14. Here you go.

    IMG_2700.jpg

Seth mentioned I just beat 3 other people to the strap...wonder if the 3rd is an RWGer too. :)

Hey Slai...I have a good idea...Why don't the 3 of us share it?? V and I will each send you $50 and we can rotate who gets it for a week at a time. Sounds good eh?

I know my username is mjmurphy, but my real name is John Doe. I'll have to send you my post office box number when my turn comes up because...uhh...uhh...a meteor hit my mail box...and...and...and the post office can't deliver to it right now...yeah...That's what happened.

OK...nevermind. Enjoy it and post some pix of it when you get it.
