  6. yeah it seems that there werent very accurate records kept of what they were building back then. There was a LOT of experimenting going on in these early years...
  7. If they were modded with CG work, gen crown and tube and some vintage lume and 2mm springbars they would sell like crazy now!
  8. pretty cool technology... medical applications, F-1 racing.. I assume its pretty scratch resistant?
  9. oh oh oh!!! I see some parts that i need!! LOL
  10. check this link for some old sub history. 6538 with red on bezel... http://www.bjsonline.com/watches/articles/0018_1.shtml <snip> Surprisingly, the ref. 6538 kept the same model reference. 1957-1961. The new ref. 6538 Submariner had a heavier case, bezel markings for the first 15 minutes, and a red triangle at the 12 position. It had a larger Triplelock style crown.... <snip>
  11. It sure looks like a screw back. The back fits very tight against the back of the case and there definatly isnt a place where you could put anything into pry it open... I will try the soldering iron thing right now. If that doesnt work i might have to try some subtle persuasion from a 8lb sledge hammer. This watch is really pisssing me off and i would LOVE to smash it!!
  12. I have an old Swiss high quality rep from about 8 yrs ago .. my explorer II. I cannot get the case back off. I have done everything and it just wont budge. I have had the case in a vice and used my rolex bergeon tool and even tapped it lightly with a small hammer and it WONT move. Its like its welded on. It getting to the point where i am scared to strip all the teeth on either the caseback or my Bergeon tool. Any ideas or tips? I am at the point of trying some pentrating oil but i dont want to ruin the movement or dial. How do i get this thing off??? HELP! Lonnie
  13. HA HA HA!! 20 something... blonde.. yeah that will work for sure. Forget the date, just take her back up to your place for a shower after her workout tell her you have puppies and booze up there and she'll follow you for sure
  14. i recently lost my Kershaw. what a great knife i am sad Lonnie
  15. to round the edges, file them with a small file then sand smooth with 400 and 600 grit sandpaper You can polish the sides if you want. its up to your personal taste. for the sides i would sand with 400 then 600 then 800 sandpaper then polish with a dremel tool last. Lonnie
  16. i got it to pop back up once but it still wont grab the stem.. the damage has been done unless you luck out. Its about a $25 or $30 fix for a watch maker i believe. If you like the watch then its worth fixing.
  17. WOW that is awesome!! I wish i had the money right now. Best of luck with your sale! Lonnie
  18. very nice!! you did a great job on the refinishing! my first rolex ever was an old 1603.. i wish i kept it Lonnie
  19. good point. Yeah i didnt even think of that. They sell pre serviced subs and some with modded crown guards (so they say). I have a sub thats identical to Andrews Ultimate ($458) but mine was much less $. but mine isnt pre serviced and my crown guards were much worse so it looks like there is some custom work being done to the higher end watches.
  20. For a base modded ETA submariner (noobmariner) you would want to see a new bezel insert added, modded crown guards and maybe a little 400 or 600 grit sandpaper on those razor sharp bracelet edges and maybe oil the bracelet as well for better feel. The next step up would be some vintageizing and a gen crown and tube. And you can go from there.. dial swaps, movement swaps.. it never ends and neither does the price.... a basic package would be about $300 as you said. That sounds about right. $200 for the sub plus $100 for bezel insert, CW work (some models would be more $ depending how bad the guards are to start with. Some members report up to 20 hours to get them perfect) and a quick polish. Adding a gen crown and tube and some more polishing and your up to about $450? Then if its a vintage MBW you can add a gen crystal and drill out the lugs for gen springbars.. the list goes on. Your best bet is to find the best sub you can start with as a base and send it to a modder or better yet, attack it yourself. Lonnie
  21. i notice my submariner occasionally is a little looser than normal. this is prob due to temperature and water retention in your body etc etc. Im sure the watch isnt changing size so it must be me LOL
