Thanks, bro :wounded1:

I won't waste any more of my time reviewing budget options <_<

Woh! Was the OP's comment referring to something of yours?

I would never mistake what you do hunting down, modding, and piecing together quality pieces from budget friendly sources for $50 canal street garbage. Thats a world apart. I apologize if you felt I was inferring anything like that, but I would hope you know I would never do that to you!

The OP's comment wasn't (as far as I know) referring to something of mine, I suspect it was just some lazy trolling to see what it provoked, and I think Nanuq's above post absolutely sums up the difference between people who are interested in watches, and the people who simply view them as status symbols of marketing and commercialism. However, the most recent watches I've purchased, such as the Tiffany & Co Sub, the DateJust for my wife, my 1655 etc, have ranged from

As Ubi and By-Tor put it, try before you buy. RWG has saved me from making some very costly mistakes at the AD.

As Lani put it, I can't wait until my 1680 and 1665 projects come off of my bench. Way more interesting to say "I assembled this from parts, procured over the last year!".

Gen forums-- I lurk on a few, pictures usually rock but the conversation is a bit blah.

RWG FTW!

I'd loooove to get some insight as to what you've turned up in your testin and searching around, by way of a guide. I suspect you and I float in similar financial boats.

Perfect example, I give By-Tor a hard time about the WM9V2, telling him we all came here because we were protecting each other from being ripped off $600+ on a fake Rolex.

The fact that it is the best sub, is beside the point. :animal_rooster:

I'd hope not for your sake, as my financial boat is little more than a rowing boat with a couple of busted oars... The only plus side, is it's stopped 'taking on water' and currently afloat, even if only for the time being... :)

I'd be happy to let you know the dealer I've been using recently if you'd be interested :)

Absolutely, there's no better feeling than that :) I don't think that owning a gen could come close (unless it was a watch worn by a specific person) as all that's involved is spending money, and the product is identical to one which can be purchased by anyone else with the price of admission, and there's no fun in that :D

Back to the question, why many reps instead of one gen?

I know a lot of people who really wonder why you might want more than one watch at all. To them the one watch is a fundamental part of their image and being a Rolex person or Patek person is very different to them.

I am not like that. I have a very wide range of brands and models. The watches are accessories and I happily change to fit the mood I am in. - And what I wear.

There is no way I would do that with Gens. In most cases their prices are rediculously inflated. By hype, advertising and profits.

So I have reps. And they are great. Yesterday I was mr Patek, now I am mr Breitling. Great fun.

Most (but not all) of my reps are really high quality watches, and now that I know how to get information about reps I am happy to Ohhh and Ahhh when I find an even better one to enhance my collection.

Yet I have recently found a Seiko which is both affordable and to my liking. So in the lower end I may still play with gens.

The only thing I would like to echo, and it is aside watches altogether, is the character of the experience here to genuine sites. There really is no comparison.

When I was fortunate enough to finally get my grail genuine, I took a picture of it destined for the pages of a genuine site. I registered (something in the back of my mind I always looked forward to, it would mean "I've arrived") and kicked around for a bit, giving it a good chance because it really is hard to get the ebb and flow of a new forum. After a week or two, I gave up. I never posted the pic.

In short order I posted it here in a WC thread and got many awesome and enthusiastic comments and PM's from people whom I've known virtually for the better part of a decade. Comments that were well aside the intrinsic value of a watch. They were pats on the back and earnest well wishes. There was genuine excitement.

On the genuine site I was afraid, in my being a noob, I would garner a hearty; "So? I have one of those." and the thread would wither.

There are many, many successful people here who came with impressive genuine collections. They are contrite out of respect to those not as fortunate. They revel when, through hard work and longing, those members who only once dreamed and lived vicariously through 'replica' realized a goal, if only in their cherished replicas.

I feel those on genuine sites largely miss the camaradarie of the 'quest', they have long arrived, are bored and are therefore boring.

RWG is, at last, a 'watch' forum.

I think that you have baited this community Into a heated dicussion, If so, well done. :drinks: Things have been kind of boring around here for a while, It happens, all communitys have there little lulls at times. I think It's great that you have brought up this topic. I am Impressed more with a rep for a very simple reason, value. I can purchase a $250-300 rep or I could spend $2000.00-10.000 for a gen. I am very happy with my Inexpensive rep. It looks the same and It usally runs the same, that has been my experence. It's dificult for me to be Impressed with a watch that cost several thousand dollars, It cost several thousand dollares for god sake, It's supposed to look good, for that kind of money I would hope so. Now we have a $200.00-300.00 rep that looks about as good In some cases It looks just as good, now thats Impressive. If you dont like reps dont buy them, simple stuff. Thanks for the bait :acute: Mike

How can a fake watch be a thing of beauty?

How does a lot of art get called art?

Reps are more fun, a great basis for DIY projects and a good way to test drive certain watches before committing to 10x the price for gen.

Or made me spend all my savings to buy THAT GEN

Sick, but I loled anyway!

What is sick about that

Dude, this is a thing of beauty:

716753067_Ktqrc-XL-1.jpg

How can that be built new and delivered to my door for $35 and even work, let alone keep good time.

Just needs a longer screw, but $35 wow

They are fun, we can play and learn and build something we want, if these were gens we would never change a strap for the fear of scratches, But we realy can get 90%+ of the watch for 10%- of the price and that to me as someone who loves watches is a no brainer

I understand completely. From what I've gathered over the years, most people on the gen sites aren't even someone I'd want to buy a beer. Their opinion of your grail is basically empty, in that it comes from an empty life. Regardless of what they say.

I posted up a photo of one of mine over there and got one reply, about how the hands and insert are wrong. It was just... empty.

But when I posted photos over here, your comment was the one that really stuck with me. Remember? It was about the Raiders of the Lost Ark movie, when the guys opened the chest and their faces melted off. I've never forgotten that. :tu:

It all depends on the mood I am in, or the task(s) for the day. Might start with a beater rep while working around the house, then go to a nice dinner where a nicer watch is in order. Same reason I don't own one pair of shoes either.

There is nothing low-end about most Seiko's. They are great watches, and have been innovators in the industry.

Debate, art, humour, avatars, dodgey sexual preferences (GILF!! really? ) oh and watches :victory:

All of the above is why I spend time here... Initially it was 'who has the best sub' I'm sure most of us have been there at some stage.

To answer the original question - beauty is in the eye of the beholder, whilst I agree you can get some awful stuff, most of what appears on RWG is of a quality that I'm happy to do a little oohhinng and ahhhing, in appreciation of either a good buy or especially when some skilled work has enhanced the original.

combine fine watches, great design, craftmanship, creativity, troubleshooting, research, learning, sourcing, engineering, photography, wit, comaraderie, international flare and sexiness... into fine glassware (chief'd, of course)...mix it up...

shaken, not stirred...

toss in an olive (nato, or course)...

that's RWG...

damn proud to spend some time here... :thumbsupsmileyanim:

Me?

I went looking for a gen Rollie many years ago, I took a left turn at Blue Fakes and ran smack into the old RWG.

I believe I lucked out and found the best social forum on the net.

I've made many friends here and been fortunate enough to meet a few.

I have been privy to great chunks of people lives who in reality are still strangers but yet friends and I've shared chunks of my life with the same people.

In the Admin team we often talk of the 'Band of Brothers', yes we argue at times but then what brothers don't, the common denominator though is that we are all single minded about keeping this board the best we possibly can.

Yes this is a watch forum, our knowledge base is second to none, but we are so much more than just a watch forum.

The passion and compassion shown by many here is what makes this board great.

It's an honor to be here and an honor to be able to serve the members.

It's the balance point of price and quality

Dude, I think you just found the new tag line for your web page. :1a:

@ Ken,

Well put, and I can appreciate the comment alluding 'squabbling brothers'. This board has it's set rules, but are guidelines merely. They only have to be. Like TRC before this, the 'respect' factor, not only for the board and Admin. but the respect the membership has for itself sets a tone. Occaisionally, and I'm party to it as well, things can get testy, but it's often reeled in of it's own accord, not the looming of 'bans', 'warns', 'locked threads' and Mod's patrolling the halls. I like it when members like 'lanikai', or even you Ken get their hackles up. Not that I'm revelling in the drama or anyone's upset, but it verifies the fact; when the benevolence flows, it is honest and deserved. They really mean it. It's not a show. I have a reputation of being a 'troll' elsewhere. 'johnnyboy' thought I were. Others. A reputation as a proactive agressive. Hmmmmmm. An Australian once told me (paraphrased); "Australians will plod along bending like a willow to keep things moving at ease, but step on his war nerve, unrepentant, and all bets are off. Something is going to get broken." I think I could get by OK in Oz. I am a better 'Demsey' here. Not different surely from the old RWG, not contrived, not 'giving it a good go' for the sake of civility, solidarity and boot licking, just inspired to be so. It's like being swept along with a current. You don't have to work at it, it just happens.

A long while ago you sent a PM; "C'mon over Dems, it's just like the old RWG!" A nice and appreciated jesture, but not very tempting. By the end there I had had a bellyful of 'RWG'. What was left over was different. Interesting. A blank canvass. A few went to work. There was a brief moment there where true balance was had. Perhaps you had to peek through the cracked windows to glimpse it, nothing you could appreciate just driving by the place but on the inside it was unique in the face of obstensibly no admin. or moderation. Short lived though. It reverted back to something 'base' and unwholesome. Why it were truly shelved once and for all. 'CPU Exceeded Errors' notwithstanding. :whistling:

Anyhoo, if I had known this were nothing like the old RWG, that it were gobs better, I may have registered sooner. Perhaps it is just as well I hadn't. You really can not appreciate milk and honey until you've tasted a good [censored] sandwich.

OK, onward.

"Man cannot create the current of events. He can only float with them and steer." - Otto von Bismark, excerpt from Wit & Wisdom Section of The Week Magazine Nov.20, 2009. Like the turds floating downstream Dems, you just gotta steer clear sometimes.

Bismark never trolled RWG. I did.

Max; 'Neo', put forth, in his masterwerke; Definitions, Information, and Rescources what a 'troll' were. The 'bend and sway' of the board to the troll's POV was obvious enough, but the requisite; ....to the point of disruption may have been misplaced if not inaccurate. I trolled RWG, most times, to the other side of the spectrum. Some call it camaraderie but trolling by any other name................is.............? The biggest troll here is 'lanikai'. He works as hard at solidarity as 'Rolexaward' worked at replica watch apartheid. I find both equally amusing, but would only prefer one over the other at my Thanksgiving Dinner table. He could bring the 'pork'. And Poi.

I envy you JB, you wax philosophic from a place you may even admit 'cometh with age', but I bet you maintained that even strain back when you played the Ramada Inn Rumba Room at twenty-two. You remind me of my old man, even though we are more peers than that generation apart. You made comment once on RWG in a thread a member was bemoaning the 'rehaut' of a rep Submariner. As a noob I saw no desperation in 'incorrect crown guards and chapter rings', "Don't sweat the small stuff" the old man would say, I said. He; When the car makes a strange noise, turn up the radio. When the VCR is blinking 12:00, throw a pair of skivvies over the machine. You thought then he may outlive us both. Maybe.

What was this thread about again? What subforum is this? Oh. Dear.

Demps

you are so correct, I really, really like the new RWG so much better. having started at TRC, like many here did, i was I guess used to a little more civil discussion. WOW! You could come over to the old RWG, and just say hello and somebody would start a flame war! I got so tired of reading threads that started out as legitimate requests for information, or projects that folks were spending a lot of time and money on and by the end of the first page it was all out war between posters.

I compare this site to the old TRC in many ways, primarily the amount of help folks are eager to give, and while there is bantering, I don't get that undercurrent of malicious mean spirited posting that was so common before.

I don't want to hijack the thread or wax nostalgic about what was or could have been. I enjoy reps very much. As someone said, it allows you to test drive the product before springing for the expensive model.I promise you, I have had no telling how many genuine watches that I lusted after, planned and schemed, saved for and finally bought, only to realize they were just not "me". I have literally sold watches that I never wore outside the house. Just tried on and thought to myself "You Idiot! why did you buy this thing?" If it's a 200 dollar rep it's a lot easier on the pocketbook to flip at a 20% Discount, over a 3000 dollar genuine that you suffer a 29% discount. Secondly, I have enjoyed the hunt for the "perfect" Sub, SeaDweller, etc. knowing full well that perfection is and elusive and probably unobtainable goal, but we set out on the quest anyway.

We oohh and aahh over watches that we admire, and in a lot of cases because we can appreciate the time and work that went into making them as perfect as possible. I promise you you will probably never see the camaradarie that you find here on the genuine forums, at least not on the "prestige" watch forums. I have made some friends and very much enjoyed some of the "minor" brands forums, but those for the most part are comprised of regular folks much like the folks here, watch lovers.

Genuines aren't always what they are cracked up to be either.I have one right now that has been back to the factory twice and it's not a year old. Their service is great, but I have to pay for shipping and insurance one way and be without the watch for 2-3 weeks. And this isn't a throw away timex or Casio either!!

Amen.

My Sub leaked on me at only 30 feet--that was the final straw & I swore I'd never buy another Rolex (not including reps). I found out last week that my boss has a three year-old Breitling Navitimer and a 1 year old Bell & Ross BR02 that are both in the shop. Pathetic.
