Here is the long awaited pics of unmodded mine with comparison to a 217:
Thanks for the great pics!
I seem to recognize that the most evident difference between our reps and the gen is the deepness of the dial black...

Girl of good taste! As an aside, the Italian Marina Militare's uniforms are fantastic. Even the woman looks good.Even if I had my military service in the airforce, I have to admit I've always been jealous of the Marina uniforms...
Yes, what a shame! Can't spot the PAM though. -
Excellent!
I bet noone would ever call you out on this.

Just one question- is the mineral glass really prone to scratching/damage?
Well, Joshua is advising that crystal as 'Synthetic Sapphire'.
In Joshua's dictionary, this would stand for 'mineral glass with anti-scratch coating'.
So it should be at least a little more resistant than ordinary glass.
I decided not to care too much about it (but ordered a couple of plexi replacements from Cousinsuk, just for the sake of peace of mind...
)

Or is this genuinely a vintage rep of Marina Militare Panerai?? Seems unlikely.
Oh my, just thinking of militar officers (or crew) wearing Purdeys on their wrist...

where I can source a new crystal with a larger Cyclops on it for my 0088
Chieftang was providing with excellent 6.75mm cyclopses. Unsure on whether he still has any left though. Try ask him.

Excellent pointing out of a classical flaw of poorly designed statistical recordings -- a biased sample. As pointed out earlier, sure Panerai is a gay watch. It's a fashionable watch, and since very generally speaking, gay men tend to dress better than us straight men it's not surprising that somebody noticed more than one gay man wearing a PAM and then wrote that it's a "gay" watch.
Better and better! What's hilarious is the "How dare you call my 44mm bad boys 'gay.' I wear them on military style rubber chaps straps for God's sake." responses. If you were not my hero already, archibald, this would make you (I suppose this is quite a gay statement?)
Well, here I have to wonder whether the cure might result even worse than the disease...But just to be sure, I'm sending my entire Pam and Muller collection--especially my muller collection--to be cured. -
sorry i don

@sssurfer,
thanks for your comments. Regarding the movement i thought it was a funny and cheap solution ( 30 euro's ) . Next time i will have to get a better mirror efect on it.
About the lume i will have to ask Tourby if he knows what kind of lume it is or if he is willing to tell me his source since a bought the case and dail and hands from him.
Well, at 30 euros surely it's worth!
Should you find the time to ask Tourby about the lume, I'll really be grateful.
Thanks,
:sss:

Most likely that 212 from King is the sapphire crystal version (probably without AR coating), the same watch that Paul is selling @229 USD.
That watch (apart from the other well known flaws) has incorrect subdial hands: metal rather than black.
Joshua's version has correct black subdial hands, but its crystal is mineral glass, not sapphire. Not necessarily a defect, as domed sapphire crystals proved quite prone to explode. After a peer review of all the available options, I recently ordered exactly that watch from Joshua.
If you are a fan of sapphire, Andrew used to have an Asian 212 with black subdial hands and AR coated sapphire crystal @308 USD. But I suppose it is sold out now, as he removed it from his list. You may still try asking him or Josh.
Should they prove unable to provide you with that watch, you may still find it also from dealers not accredited on RWG, e.g.:
http://www.watch-ebay.com/ProductsView.asp?id=210
Price is very high, but that dealer makes huge discounts for repeated customers. If you are interested, drop me a PM and I'll try to introduce you to him in hope to get a discount for you.
In any case, please consider that I choosed the 198 USD version from Josh in the end.
BTW, welcome to the forum, it might be nice to introduce yourself in the proper section before starting asking question, and it would even be nicer to say 'thanks' to those who gave you their answers, like in: http://www.rwg.cc/members/index.php?showtopic=39230

Great troubles, great result. I love it -- with a possible exception for how the movement looks, I have to admit.
I especially love the color of the lume. Did you make it? May I ask what color (or mix) has been used?
-
Wonderful!
I too especially like the 089 - strap combo.

Excellent collection, congrats!
And yes, yours is probably the best Cousteau shot ever.

I too am surprised at this. I have some 203 (supposed to be almost identical to the Fiddy in dimensions), both in auto and manual versions, and I have always been successful in removing the movement from the back.
Now that you make me recall it, though, I seem to remember I read something similar on the 'old' RWG.
I wonder whether different rep Fiddy versions may be different under this respect...

OOPsss
.... wrong choice of semantics on my part
... I interpreted the removal of the crystal as: removing it to remove the AR coating on a double sided AR coated sapphire .. on the inside... i was saying it would be better to remove it from the outside of the crystal .. leave the coating on the inside alone
Ah, now I understand. Apologies, it was because of my poor English. Just, I also missed to correctly understand what you said as I was (and I am) assuming that Davidsen's AR is inner-side only.
Yes the polished used to polish .. billet aluminum .. found a lot on Harley customs ... it was a nice suprise to see the scratch come out of the crystal ... it had the Ar coating on it and that's how i found out you could use that to remove part of the coating .. it was a pretty deep scratch.... on the metal, if you want to get out fine scratches a undershirt and the mag polish will do ... deep scratches .. you can use Jewelers rouge with a dremel.. then use the mag polish with a dremel and finish with a soft cloth and the mag polish .. 3 steps ..like with Gold polishingGood to know and thanks again for the tip!
I may add that I too verified that a polishing paste, petroleum/nafta based, was the most effective way to remove the usual AR coat.
Cape Cod cloths are almost alike that. Naturally they are not effective on removing deep scratches from metal, and they are safe on sapphire.

Great, sssurfer, I'll do that! What does Jetmid mean? *g*
Try a search on the 'old' RWG, it might prove fun (provided it did not get cancelled in the six months blackout).

Ever wonder why genuines don't use Asian???
They could not justify their scandalous prices...
-
What is your concern about, exactly?
Being an addicted, or being afraid that the customs might seize your watches?
Or both?
In any case -- congrats.
-
Yes, gay.
What is more gay than going to an art museum? (no, don't answer that)
Sorry, I can't resist:
Should you be able to take a similar pic by sitting on the top of that pyramid, well, that would be even more gay...

well, I will need to redo the case so that the CG appears to be sitting away from the case more. Currently, you cannot really see the "flat" side of the CG before the curvy side of it. Secondly, I will need to remove the irritating AR from the crystal. The gen AR is sooo subtle that you almost can't see any AR at all. Thirdly, I will do a final finish touchup on the crown surface as the finishing currently appears a little too rough. I will also need to redo the inside of the CG lever too. And finally, I will remove those fingerprints on the gears, swan neck regulator and the movement bridges.... And maybe some little touch up here and there....
Wow, you are heading to really ultimating an ultimate!
Congrats, don't miss to let us know your results.
would not advise you to remove ar from inside of crystal ... Do it from the outside .... check with the tech guy's REGARDING CRYSTAL PRESSURE ....( I used a vise grip pliers on my fiddy ... could not find a case back opener...LOL)lanikai, are you telling that you have been able to remove a crystal by pulling it from the outside, instead of pushing it from the inside after opening the case and removing the movement?
Also thanks for the aluminium mag tip. I thought that only diamond abrasive past would be able to work on sapphire.
Mmm! Purty Purdey

Uhm... I share with the Italian less than 1% of my way of thinking, but I doubt it is true... people politically oriented at extreme left, perhaps...
Not under military law. In theory it would be possibly punishable under ordinary law (for a capitano di corvetta as for everyone), but as a matter of fact in Italy noone cares a rat ass about what watches people wear.
Hope you had a good party.
