  1. Has anyone noticed that the seconds hand on the rep 1665's is too long?

I am awaiting the arrival of my DRSD and have been scrutinising photos from doubleredseadweller.com and I noticed this discrepancy.

Here is a photo of a gen DRSD:

Notice the length of the second hand. It falls just short of minute index on the dial.

Here is a photo of my MBW:

As you can see the second hand extends well into the index markers. The same is true of the cheaper sub based DRSD's. So, does anyone know where to get good sea dweller hands where the second hand is correct?

  2. Hello chaps,

Sorry to be a killjoy, but who cares where they came from? I certainly don't. I also assume that everyone now agrees that they are true MBW's and not some strange fake of a fake. I really don't see what it matters if Josh bought them over the counter, cut off a finger in exchange or performed some dubious sex acts with numerous individuals for the merchandise. The fact is he secured MBW's to the 'mass market' and that is a good thing. As to the price well that is for the buyer to decide.

Feel free to shoot me down in flames immediately.

  3. I am at a loss for words. You've got to do what you've got to do. As far as I am concerned we have lost the master. RWG is/was a special place mainly because of people like The Zigmeister. I have never had contact with him either by PM or email. He has responded to a couple of my threads - for which I am eternally grateful. I know a quality individual when I see it and he is one, no doubt. And by the way, anyone here who cannot see that could do us all a favour and leave this place for elsewhere.

I hope you find the strength to return and pass on your much needed knowledge and I thank you for the (albeit indirect) guidance you have already given me and I sincerely wish you well for the future.

PS. Thanks to you, my 1665 is now in the hands of a genuinely talented person and my terrible experience with RBJ is a distant memory. Cheers!

  4. Freddy333,

I have read and re-read this thread and I think what you are proposing is superb. I started looking for a good vintage rep daytona many moons ago and I could not accept the symmetrical pusher layout. Not at all. Hence, when I found out about DW and EE watches I pounced on an EE and, after a few hiccups, I now have a watch that I am quite happy with. You will notice I say 'quite happy'. I will tell you what I am unhappy about.

    1. My dial is rubbish. I would like to replace it with a decent PN (exotic) but do not know where to get one.

    2. The watch has an Asian 7750 movement. As you know this is an auto movement. Although I love the fact that I don't have to wind it, I know it is wrong and that bugs me.

    3. Allied to point 2. is one of my biggest issues, the caseback. To accomodate the rotor it is too deep (as you know) and this is very annoying.

    In conclusion:

If you were to produce a watch that had a decent dial. Asymmetric pushers. Manual wind movement and (importantly) flat caseback I think you would be on to a winner. Just to harp on about the caseback for a second, I know you said that what you propose does not have the flat caseback so then I have to say what's the point of a manual wind movement? Don't get me wrong I think what you are trying to do is fantastic but if the watch has that deep caseback then it had may as well have a rotor as well, and if that is the case then all you end up with is my EE and I for one would be back to square one ie with the three annoying points mentioned above.

Can you get flat casebacks? I really think it would make what you propose absolutely superb.

Good luck and all the best,

    Dieselpower.

  5. Its not so much the colour of the glass, I don't care about that but its the shape that my watchmaker says he can not get any more. Its difficult to describe but if you look at the photo below you can see that the bezel (in profile) is shaped at a 45 degree angle rising to where it comes into contact with the crystal, well, on the correct crystal that line carries on and then arcs to near horizontal, a bit like a flattened dome.

As you can see, the replacement crystal has vertical sides and this is wrong. Like I said, my watchmaker has rounded off the top edge to reduce the harshness of the look but it is not right and makes a surprisingly big difference to the look of the watch. With the correct crystal it looks much more old fashioned.

    I hope this makes sense.

  6. Nice vintage Rollie!

These are good value these days, if one dont mind the small size. I have picked up an Oysterdate (6694) and modified the endlinks on a 20mm replica band to fit.

Is yours a true Chronometer, or a redial?

All original never been re-finished. The only thing not original from 1952 is the glass.

  7. Hi Freddy333,

Sorry I forgot to point out it is not a ladies watch it is a gents with 19mm lugs. Although it is a gents it is quite 'delicate' and my wife likes large watches anyway so she is very happy with it. She also likes the patina and does not mind the fact that it has been 'previously owned' so all that is good but you have given me an idea about the bracelet though - I will have a look at the link you kindly posted and see if there is a 19mm bracelet available (Xmas is coming!). The story of the crystal is not a happy one however. The original crystal (glass) had a curved profile at the edges but was damaged by my watchmaker upon removal (admittedly it was already cracked) and they are not made anymore so he had to fit a crystal of the correct diameter and polish its harshly angled edge to try to replicate the profile of the original. This has not been altogether successful but as the glasses are no longer available I don't see a way around it. If anyone knows where I might get a NOS glass I would be most grateful for the info. I don't know what size it is other than measuring the diameter if the inside of the bezel - which appears to be 29.5mm.

    Thanks for any help/suggestions,

    Dieselpower.

  8. Hi all,

We don't see many photos of bubblebacks here so I thought I would show you the semi-bubbleback (c 1952) I gave to my wife as a birthday present. Plain and simple but I love the dagger hands and of course the domed caseback. Hope you like it too.

  9. Oops, sorry chaps, got it wrong. The case is for a 5500 model (19mm lugs) I'm still tempted though, I guess a 1520 movement for it would be cheaper than a 1570. Thanks for helping, so now you know exactly what it is, how's the price?

    Thanks (again),

    Dieselpower.

  10. Emmzy, not only do you have the funniest avatar ever. You are also an appreciator of the greatest football team. Manchester City. Yes you got my home town correct (eventually :D ) I had a season ticket when I was a youngster. Franny Lee, Mike Summerbee, Colin Bell and the rest. I was at the match at Old Trafford when we put Utd where they belong (2nd Division) you know the one, when Dennis Law back heeled into their goal. Ah what a wonderful memory. Anyway I digress. Yes correctly identified - Manchester. The hub of the universe.
