  1. The rep dealers should hire some American quality control assurance experts and ship them over to the bigger factories, hoping that their influence will cause a change in the continuous stream of damaged, non-working or faulty watches being shipped out.

Nobody here can tell me they had a smile on their face when the $250 watch they ordered came with some kind of small, minute but painfully obvious and easily avoidable flaw like dust under the glass, a blemish on the face, or the entire bracelet covered in some kind of disgusting oil.

  2. I'll be disabling the running seconds soon in the hope that it fixes it.

Aren't you disappointed that doing so will completely ruin the appearance of the watch? The classic question... is it better to live in a state of perpetual paralysis and misery than to live at all? :brow:

I know the feeling, though, these stupid crappy junk movements are the only things separating me from my dream watch - the Daytona.

  3. It says "Alpha" ?

    The 6:00 hand is a ... 24H indicator subdial?

Can I just give you some advice... corgi instinct I guess... don't try swimming with it.

EDIT: I just found this stuff... if you type in "alpha watch" on ebay you get a ton of these re-badged "Rolex" etc... they look to be quite solid but... why get an Alpha watch when you can get a 'Rolex' watch for just a little more?

  4. REP materials are, most often, made to be as cost-effective for the manufacturer as humanly possible. We already know that their "5mil" 18K gold plating peels off like banana skin after a few months, and I have personally experienced this even though I thought it was impossible. That said, it can be assumed that the CZs used are not the most "high end perfect cut insert random number nobody understands here quality". Granted, it is an assumption on my part, but it is based on pure logic.

    1. Rep manufacturers use cost-effective materials.

    2. Cubic Zirconium is a material.

    3. (1+2) Rep manufacturers use cost-effective cubic zirconium.

  5. I'm sure that, as an elderly man, he must have been quite confused. You should realize that not everyone in the world is a watch expert like we are! That said, it sounds very rude of him to ask you not to break it... but maybe he was scammed, and maybe he thinks he is wearing a very expensive watch... it can happen if you don't know anything about them or if you're elderly and/or senile.

  6. Many people who get their watch serviced claim it comes to them covered in oil and dirt, supposedly from the fingers of the repairmen initiating the modifications. Mine was waterproofed and indeed the bracelet was very grimey... so it is a possibility. Overall I would not trust their waterproofing to swim, maybe a walk through a rain storm, but not to swim... if I wanted to swim with it I would take it to a pro to get it waterproofed.

  7. I don't have any watches with diamonds.. and here's why: these are not diamonds, they are not even close. Don't kid yourself. These are the crappy CZ crystals that ANYONE with an eye for jewelry can tell is a fake just by glancing at it. Yes, us gents probably wouldn't know the difference... but I can tell you that most women and anyone with a remote interest in precious stones will be able to quickly ascertain the value of these "supposed" $50000+ creations. The fact is, if you sport a Rolex with a diamond bezel, you hold yourself accountable to very intense scrutiny... unless you are very posh, 99.99% of people will know it is a fake even if they don't know a clue about diamonds!

This is why I do not plan to buy a diamond watch. They are not diamonds! There is no stone that can twinkle like that without being a diamond... there are very high quality CZs yes, but even then, place a real and a CZ side by side - it's a big difference. It spoils the watch and is a waste of money. Of course, if it is something in your taste, I respect that... and there are more than a few watches in Mr. Freeman's collection I would like to borrow for a night on the town. Just know that you might as well affix a giant stamp to your forehead reading "LOOK AT ME! I'M WEARING A FAKE WATCH ENCRUSTED WITH EVEN FAKIER DIAMONDS!"

I did want to get some diamonds for myself, so I went on ebay and bought a beautiful diamond encrusted bracelet - it looks much like that of a daydate or datejust with the center links covered in CZ. The main difference was these were high quality CZ, on high quality gold plate. I got the look, and it twinkles beautifully. I took it into a jewelry store and tried on a comparable one, except worth much more as it contained real diamonds. No comparison. Indescribably tremendous difference. But, to the untrained eye, it looks the biz. It's totally up to you, but if I was in your place, I'd invest in a nice ring with some gen precious stones instead of getting the quintessential hillbilly's wristwatch.

    Just my two cents folks...

  8. The genuine is not on the site because it is a replica of some kind of impossible to find limited edition prototype... this is the style your looking for, the REF 5070:

    Genuine, brand new Patek Philippe 5070G - $55,995 - $58,900 on ebay.

It should be noted that this reference dates back to the "1463" which came up in several forms... they are rare and limited pieces fetching tens of thousands at auction. The only one with Roman numerals I can think of is a very very rare limited edition of the REF2499 but that has Roman hour markers at the 12 and 6, not fully around... it was made by special order for someone. The watch you have picked there has never existed as genuine, and your closest bet for accuracy is the one with numerical hour markers. However, with a connoisseur piece like this, I would hardly suggest choosing it over the one you aesthetically prefer, as I must agree with you, it is a much nicer and sharper watch. Both of them have serious flaws regarding dial placement making them easy to spot as reps. However, the 1463 pictured below is the closest to the last model pictured in my post (10). It dates back to 1940, and sold at auction for a record-breaking $230,000 USD-

The one you have chosen is a beautiful watch, and despite its dial positioning and hour markers, I find it has the most faithful shape thanks to the chrono depressers and overall "style" - its hard to put that in words, but I personally, as a Patek Philippe lover, would choose this model as well. Whatever you pick, I salute your decision to buy one of these watches... they are true masterpieces whose movements are even close in resemblance to their original counterparts.

EDIT: Fixed images to satisfy TTK - we don't want him to get too fussy.

  9. Right, but if they can spell words like "Tourbillon" and "Sapphire Crystal Water Resistant to 50M" and "Officially Certified Chronometer" why the hell can't they spell "Swiss" or "Breguet".

Narikaa... are you implying the manufacturers do this on purpose because they are disgruntled to be making watches? If this is the result, it's a miracle most of mine are still running!!

  10. The standard chrono for $228... the moon phases and power reserves are all pretend complications.

I personally think the Roman Number looks the best... but the last model has the best hour markers. Personally its up to you, but these guys are all quite close - of course they have imperfections, but still, number 2 is quite good...

  11. My dad wears a Yacht-Master, but on white face. The thing is absolutely magnificent. The bracelet and bezel are so sparkly, twinkling in even the most faintest light. A great buy.

On the other hand, the Omega is a great watch too. I have tried it on at the store, and it really wasn't my style, but I do own a Seamaster GMT new version which is quite sharp. Perhaps the Omega is a fundamentally better rep, but you just cannot beat the appearance and sheer attractiveness of a Rolex sports watch, especially if you don't have one yet. The amount of looks you will get from people is typical Rolex, but be aware that few people will give the Omega a second thought...

Good luck! I know its tough to make a hard choice like this. But if I were in your place, looking for my very first rep, hands down it would absolutely be a Rolex... absolutely no contest. Omega would not even be in the list... maybe for your next one, you can choose more of a 'connoisseur' piece, but you should know that Joshua sells like twenty of those perfect Omega's every week... they are extremely popular watches, while the Yacht-Master is much rarer, as people often choose the Submariner for their sports model needs.

Either way, you are clearly a different person than myself. When I first discovered reps, I knew what I wanted, a full gold president on gold face with gold gold gold... that's it. Nothing else compared. Only now am I starting to gain more experience and buying things like Breitling, Omega, Patek Philippe, and of course, everyone's favorite... Panerai!

    Good luck!
