  1. So, Ms. Barrett is also a film critic.......where else can she surprise us?......

I've mentioned this before too, but I actually do this for a living. Not only in the English language either, since many films have staggered debuts all over the world, as you know. :)

@Sin22: Stardust! Thanks so much. I had not caught that. Another one I cannot miss is Once. I have a preview DVD screener of that somewhere, though it long since premiered in cinemas here in the US. Because I specialise in what is called foreign film in America, I get a lot of these screeners for review. Nina Frisk from Sweden was one, and This is England was another.

This is England is simply amazing. Must-see fare.

@Dieselpower: I love Ealing comedies, and that's a particular fave. :) ...but we're living through the Golden Age of Indies, people. Get out there, and watch some of them. You won't be disappointed!

  2. Finally sat down yesterday evening and watched Fractured with Anthony Hopkins...

Have to say, it was pretty damn good...

I have gone on the record innumerable times saying that I disliked Fractured, albeit it's not unwatchable (far from it).

But I have to go with DET11 and say that its cousin, Mr. Brooks, was a much better overall film than Fractured.

The latter had too many idiosyncracies for me to appreciate, and too boot, had a cold, antiseptic air. Of course, it was mostly a legal drama, whereas Mr. Brooks is more like a peek into the mind of a serial killer during the fact, not after it.

Neither is a must-see film. Both are worth the price of admission/rental, though. IMHO. :)

  3. both my gen 111 and 113 wind very smoothly and take about 110 "winds" until I hit the stop....my rep 114 with swiss movement is just as smooth in its winding but it only takes about 60 "winds" until it stops....

Wow, 110 winds eh? I only ever took mine to 80, and you saw what happened with my DSN 112. :(

Yes, I too wondered about this. I attributed this smoothness factor to the differences in quality, from each collector to the other.

My tobacco-dial PAM 118 feels like butter being churned. Gorgeous feeling, no friction whatsoever. It was from a member trade, and has Swinese guts I think the chap said.

Now my Paul PAMs are like winding an old Gypsy moth. Slow, truculent, resisting. The Mini-Fiddy and the PAM 199 both.

Andrew's vary. His 113 -- silky soft winding. His 111hs, not so much. Same Asian guts inside.

    Wonder what gives exactly. :)

  4. i have this on my 036,.. toscana fiero.. changes shades when bent.. great combo with TI.. light enough not to overshadow the TI.. TC Straps

Good choice! I was just about to suggest Tankster to get the Toscana Fiero too. :)

However, if you do want to go the cheaper route, I was looking at Bob's auctions on eBay for you, and this popped out:

    Item number: 300170984883

    a766_1.JPG

    Item number: 300170984512

    942a_1.JPG

Don't be afraid to try unusual colours and hides with the Titanium, Tankster. It's so versatile, that it'll accept anything. Maxmilian has a Toscana Amber (light tan) on his 082 (blue-dial Ti case), which looks amazing. I fancy your 036 wouldn't look amiss with it.

Let me try to scrounge up some Wristies of my 177h, which MIGHT give you some ideas.

EDIT: Here's Erwinner's thread on his own 177h, asking for strap suggestions. I realise it's not the same watch, but at least it can give you ideas. :)

    Micah V-Dark strap

    297741-758.jpg

    Mario Paci Senape

    297741-760.jpg

TC Glossy Croc (Custom-made only; bought from a member, Rolli)

    298012-629.jpg

Erwinner later posted this shot of his Fiero, which had achieved amazing patina!

    PAM177H_FIERO_008.jpg

And Titanium can even go with a Carbon Fibre strap

    carbonsidebb5.jpg

...so you see, super versatile. Good luck! :)

  5. Hello V:

You make me scare ...You really make me scare...Why? I'm afraid of "Snake".....Can't imagine how can I "Wear" a snake on your wrist.....Ar...Ar...

Wow, Raymond, talk about blast from the Wristcheck past!

Ahh, scared of snakes...I am also scared of a certain animal and I probably would feel the same as you, if I had to view it on someone's wrists. Sorry about that. :(

Unrelatedly, are you going to watch the new Indiana Jones film coming out soon? :p

  6. This is my last attempt or I'm not contributing again

I am rarely mean, or disagreeable but this hissy fit is really too embarrassing.

I waited well over a week to get upgraded, and yes, I wasn't thrilled at the wait either. But having made the commitment to be a valuable member of this forum, I HOPE, I knew my upgrade would finally go through and that my money wasn't being disregarded.

What I didn't do is to behave like a 15 year-old child, who felt equal parts ignored and targetted for disrespect. Instead, I would've posted something AGAIN, inquiring with measured tone if one could be upgraded.

You had your explanation above. Others no doubt are in the same boat as you, but you don't see them crying to teacher. Perhaps it's time to cowboy/cowgirl up and offer an apology to all those who had to read your whiny post.

  7. Any help would be appreciated in the following:

    1. is the 111 Ultimate that much better than the 177H, or are they comparable?

    2. Where to get the 177H? is there an "ultimate" equivalent.

    thanks in advance.

Davidsen's Ultimate 177h. Ask German in Denmark, or Erwinner. No contest.

PM Davidsenjpn, and I'm sure he'll sort you out.

Western Union only, but if you find one of those Check Cashing places, they'll do it for $30, instead of plus $40.

For straps, PM me, or hit Search for "Panerai straps" -- Timeconnection.biz and Bob are the way to go in the beginning; the former's Daily Specials especially. DSN has better-than-average rep straps, but still. You can't wear those puppies with such a nice watch.

ps- My B-day is tomorrow, so I want to order it in the next few hours! :D

Early Happy Birthday, Ssabripo!! A Scorpio, eh? Hooboy, you guys are murder. ;)

  8. I also saw Lydia wearing a PAM the other day on TV, couldn't tell what model. :)

Stop! Really? I'm very impressed by this fat old broad. Yes, she's Italian (born, raised in the US), but as Sssurfer says most Italians are not watch-conscious.

I find it delightful that Italian-AMERICANS, like Stallone and Battali are the ones with the PAMs on their wrists.

  9. HBB RG PCeramic and PAM217 for me. Occasionaly the Ω PO does too. That thing is bigger than the diameter implies.

I gave you an "artistic" just because of the Ω. :p

Last comment I got was last Monday, after a whole flight next to a very nice Spanish lady (who worked on some powerpoint on her sub laptop, while I was listening to music&browsing the "How to spend it"FT) I offered to help her with her hand luggage. She thanked me and smiling asked me:"That is a very nice watch. What is it?" It was the HBB. I thanked her and introduced her to my precious. Actually that was the second comment of the day but the previous one was from an ugly guy so I guess this story doesn't fit in the theme of the thread :p:)

Think I've mentioned this before, but Joshua told my mother that Hublots are HUGE in Spain.

Does this mean your average Spaniard in the street will know a HBB from Adam? No. It just means that amongst the knowledgeable, they're majorly covetted. Joshua apparently sells a tonne of the pricier HBB to Spanish customers. If they complain about the $900 pricetags, they're not saying. :D

BTW: I always travel with a less flashy watch in my suitcase, in case I have a meeting that I have to stay under the radar... Young CFO and HBB RG don't mix well for some people :)

Clever. Not that I was ever a CFO, but when I was gainfully employed in international banking, I rotated exactly 3 watches, none of which were Rolexes. Nothing raises your boss' hackles more, in a competitive environment, than to have a kid who wears pricier clothes, jewelry or watches than s/he.

  10. What a great thread! I was going to start a thred today becasue last night my wife and i were watching the food networks Next Iron Chef and One of the judges was wearing a PAM.

Would that be Mario Battali, whom I pictured in my intro post? :)

He's the big fat blond Italian dude, who wears orange crocs. Can't miss him!

P.S.: Never watched Iron Chef all the way through. Dated a guy who loved the show, and it bored me to bits. Naturally, I can't cook so never saw the attraction of the Food Network.

I jumped off the couch and says to my wife, Leece thats the watch I want to buy after xmas! She says HAH? How can you see that? I laughed and says wow after just a couple months on RWG I am already noticing watches like bever before. SO guys thanks lol :p

    Leece, hehe. :)

Just you wait until you watch a film in the cinemas, now that you've transformed yourself from a guy who is INTO watches, into a chap who is a daily watch hobbyist.

It's maniacal trying to watch a movie without leaning forward every time a wrist with a watch comes into view.

@Corgi: Aw shucks. Thanks. *kicks pebbles* BTW, yes I have a big ego, but don't think that for every Corgi who thinks that about me, I'm not aware there is a counterpart who is saying the opposite. I'm not entirely self-deluded. :p

  11. My cousin recently got married and postponed the reception until we could get all the family members together. My wife had never been to Miami so we headed on down.

Wow! To think I've been bedridden for a week, so you totally missed a possible Vicky sighting, Lord Rasta. :p

I took her to South Beach on saturday and she was having a blast. I used to live in Miami and I remember when South Beach was a bad area and was to be avoided at all costs.

Blimey, that was ages ago, and only lasted about 7 years. The Marielitos (a wave of over 100,000 Cubans who were "released" by Fidel Castro in 1980, the latter of whom took the opportunity to empty out his gaols, and send in rapists, thieves, the mentally unstable...) occupied South Beach 'til about 1988. Before that, it was a community of little old senior citizens, many of whom were Holocaust survivors, who sat in the hotel porches all day rocking themselves.

But being the US, and particularly, being South Florida, that changed LIGHTNING quickly into the elegant, urbane area you saw before you.

(I still don't care for SoBe, though I've been here nearly 10 years. It's too claustrophobic AND reminds me of Copacabana -- with rich and poor, normal and criminal, living cheek-by-jowl)

So we're walking, taking in the sites, deciding on a place to eat, she's stopping in every store and suddenly I see this little AD right there on Ocean Dr. Those of you that live in the S. Florida area may be aware of it.

Hmm, there are a few. Not sure by your description where you landed. ;)

So I go in there and they had Omegas, Rado, Raymond Weil, Tissot and Jacob & Co. just to name a few. I tried on a 20k Jacob & Co. which isn't my style but I figured what the heck. There was an older gentleman in there with a gen Ingy on that he let me take a look at once we struck up a conversation. The first thing I checked was the case back and it had "CO" instead of "Co". I tried on most of the Omegas and as a general rule I never wear a rep in an AD. I was so excited that I forgot to take off the rep Aqua Terra I was wearing. It has the bluish/purplish dial to it and the AD loved it. They only had the white face AT's and if he noticed it was a rep he never called me out on it.

Very nice. In my experience, ADs in South Florida are not too embarrassed to call you out, and can be very snobby about it -- the only exception being the rubes at Torneau. So I think you lucked out.

Once the wife was done spending my money she found me still in there and announced "don't even think about it". :D It was a great trip, got to see family and friends I haven't seen in 20 years. Getting to hang out in a AD and talk watches was one of the highlights though. I missed my RWG family but I was warned to stay away from the internet for the weekend. :bangin:

Ah, 20 years. There you go.

As the saying goes about the weather in Florida, which is true of the neighbourhoods, if you don't like it, just wait 5 minutes. It'll change. :)

    Nice anecdote, LR!

  12. what do you guys think of the "113" from davidsen??? ^_^

The 113g, right? With polished CG. :)

Raymond has the 113h, and it's also lovely!

    DSCF3238.jpg

Very nice. You need yourself a nice strap (hit Search for "Panerai strap") and wallah, you're in there.

  13. First off big hello to everyone and thanks for some very helpful info here.

anyway great way to start the week with a knock at the door and my first rep! Breitling bentley 675 from PT, absolutly stunning!! tried to take some photos but cant seam to focus on the watch with my camera so will have to have another go later on.

I'd like to add my welcome to Deltatahoe's, Josh (guessing that's your name!). May your visits prove fruitful, for you and for us -- given that so few people post Wrist-checks of their Breitling Bentleys! Can't wait. :)

If your camera has a motion stabilisation or macro function, as my Sony does, that REALLY helps. Good luck!

  14. Amen to that...she was the only reason I went to see this typical Michael Bay (Pearl Harbor/Armageddon)OverTheTopPleaseTurnOFFTheOverHypedSensationalistMusicalScore...

Heh. I have a friend who hates anything Michael Bay does. Well after Pearl Harbour, I can't totally fault him.

...I had to cover my ears....but my eyes were treated to great CGI and Ms Fox..giddyup...

Tech, you're so raunchy! I love it. :D

  15. Just for a load of laughs, David Lynch's Eraserhead

If you haven't committed suicide after seeing it, try the director's cut of Blade Runner for its soothing music by Vangelis, the perfect visuals, the more than decent performance by Harrison Ford, the absolutely stunning 'Rachel' and the total ambiguity of the replica/human storyline....

OMG, you reference Eraserhead and Blade Runner?

Ryyannon, you and I scary similar you know that, don't you? If the Italian boyfriend thing doesn't work out, I'm taking a Jefferson Airplane to Paris. And yes, I like pigeons -- usually medium-rare, but hey.

    Actually go to a cinema?

    Yikes, that's sooo....well, promiscuous.

WTF. We're going to the UGC George V in the Champs-Elys

  16. Not a new release, but still...

    Elizabeth the Golden Age

Ok it plays a little loose and fast with certain historical facts (dramatic licence I suppose) and I doubt it'll go down a storm in the Vatican, but Cate Blanchette is, as always, extremely watchable, and the direction and cinematography superb. Once again, ignoring the reviews pays dividends. Not going to win any Oscars of course, but all of our party liked it, which is really all that matters.

I'm glad you said that, as the critics were brutal about this film, as noted! At least now, I have a character reference for it, as I know you have similar tastes as I. Well, I imagine we do. ;)

  17. Just for fun.... Does anybody really know what watch Cruise was wearing in the movie...? Does not even look like a chrono.

Incredibly, I always thought it was an IWC! You mean to tell me it's not, Chrgod? That sucks.

I checked the reference site for watches in movies once given me by Fitmic, for which Puggy has added some info:

    http://jitteryjim.com/?page_id=432

Nothing on Top Gun. And watches play a big role in that film...

  18. Welcome.

I diodn't know you liked hand bags ;)

I didn't know you PM Ken.

Yes, Lord Rasta, Kenberg sells them. I HEARD that there's another seller on RWI who does too, and I see Piratedzeus reading this, so I know he'll post who that is.

Never dealt with him, but I trust Kenberg implicitly. For an Aussie.
