  1. I hope you do find comfort and joy and a sense of power again when Daddy let's you play with his weapons.......it must be a biitch having none of your own......!

TTK, I don't see any progress or sense of goodwill in your replies to me, despite my extending you an olive branch. You reply with yet more rambling misogynistic and class conscious observations.

What can I do? I literally DO NOT know what I can do in this situation. I am at a loss to know how to relate to you.

You shouldn't feel in any way, shape or form threatened by me. But here I am, on this forum, here to stay. Forums change, people come and go, some people we like, some we don't.

Most usually avoid those they don't like, or keep their interaction with them at a minimum. Neither you nor I are a hundred dollar bill that everyone is going to like, and as adults, we know that.

So I ask you again, let's have peace between you and me, for the good of this forum. Click on your account, enter vbarrett in "ignore user", and be happy. I'm just not worth it. Really.

However, I'm at your disposal via PM from now on.

  2. Ok how about we stop pushing this thread Off Topic and i wont have to close it down. ;)

    Ken

Ken, I apologise for not heeding your warning, but I felt something had to be said. I have been trying all day to get my dad to give me his guns, but they're under lock and key...

I'll try to post a photo soon, possibly with all my PAMs alongside. Hope you can understand and forgive me.

  3. Yes....but always under the umbrella of Daddy and Mommy....no?

Going by the fingers I wouldn't say so........besides I think she posted somewhere that she possesses a 'big' personality....I think that may be Internetspeak for big thighs.....could be wrong tho'...I have been before.....but not often ....

TTK, why are you doing this to me? Why would you say this to anyone? Where does this bitterness and vitriol come from?

Is your intent to humiliate me, or to turn people against me, by inferring that I am fat, and therefore hope that the guys here will lose interest in me as "a female" because I'm not attractive? Is this why you think guys here reply to me? Because they think I'm pretty or something? :)

No, they reply because I'm nice, gentle, and wish only the best for RWG. Maybe I'm not a lady, I'm a young Grande Dame..., but I'm ladylike. I hope a part of you sees this.

But TTK, I genuinely don't understand this need for you to do this. I have absolutely nothing against you...

...except when you touch on my family.

I would forgive you a MILLION times, no matter how much you hurt me in this and other threads, indeed other forums, with your personal snipes and attacks on me.

But do not reference my family like this. That's just not on. I am speaking to you from my heart, as one adult to another.

Please. I'm begging you here. Let's have peace, yes?

  4. Hmm. Just this afternoon, I was strolling through the site of a 1850 year old Roman Bath-House. Here's the wall of the tepidarium and the caldarium, here's the cold plunge ... I like the history of Europe.

I've not spent enough time in the US to pick up on its history, though.

This is no way is a retort against you, Pugwash, but in a small way, your reply is reminded me of an anecdote.

When Consuelo Vanderbilt arrived in her new home of Blenheim Palace, on her way to becoming the new Duchess of Marlborough, you know how the mayor of Woodstock (bedecked in his chains of office, as usual) greeted her?

"Welcome, ma'am. You'll be happy in your new surroundings, we trust, now that you have a chance to be in a civilised country with history and culture. The Mayoress and I live in a house which is 300 years older than America."

I quote from memory, from her autobiography, you understand so forgive me if I got the exact wording wrong.

But that was the gist of it.

As long as I live, I'll never know why we British delight in making these comparisons to Americans' faces. My grandfather, bless his soul, was the worst of the lot.

  5. I'd say it's good to be back home, but it's a bit depressing in its own right.

Sadly, the more I visit the UK & Europe, the less I wish to live in the States. Culture, history, fashion, cuisine, efficient driving skills, etc.--is the only thing we have going for us is a cheaper cost of living? ;)

Good to be home again, though.

Wow, you're one of the few people I know who comes back to their home, and doesn't feel happy instead of slightly sad!

Being "European" (I don't consider myself European, I'm British), I too get frustrated with South Florida's comparative lack of history and culture, as I grew up understanding those two things to be.

Miami was founded in 1896, and really, you'd be hard-pressed to find buildings over 50 years old here -- so all that awe-inspiring, ancient architecture is completely missing here. I miss that.

Yes, we have a city ballet company, an opera company, a philarmonic, great cinemas, and attractions, but that SOLIDNESS that the continent and the UK have is utterly missing, you know what I mean?

But in compensation, all the pitfalls of ancient cities and cultures are avoided.

Buildings and bridges are not corroded, ugly, depressing and the streets don't smell of wee. Bureaucracy is at a minimum, and police are vigilant but not ever-present with surveillance as, e.g., in Stockholm and London.

I only say this because I recently noticed you're from South Florida too. If you were from Idaho or some boofoo city in Jersey, you might think the same thing, but I assure you, people from Scunthorpe, Rennes, and Nagoya do too.

EDIT: OH! You had "South Florida" as your location before, now it says Tampa. TAMPA! Wow. My condolences dude. Hope you get back to Yourup soon.

  6. Lol--thanks for all the warm replies!

WELCOME BACK, GIO!! I hope you have great anecdotes about living the good life. :)

The replies were lacking because we were SWAMPED with posts the moment we came back online, 2 days after you left. I guess it got lost in the mix! Don't worry, you were missed!

  7. Hmm, can you tell that I'm not married?! Most of these interests don't match up with the interests of the opposite sex too well . . .

I'm guessing you're still a little young; in your travels you try to hook up with the same kind of women you do back home; and you want to enjoy life before settling down.

What I'm trying to say is that you can find women who compliment your interests (look at me), but when you marry, your priorities (should) change.

I notice one thing about men -- they try to find the perfect woman, in body, personality and interests. That's a recipe for life disconsolation, Smilingbear.

Just try to find a woman, once you've had fun, who is there for the tough times and the good times. And don't let her go if you do. :)

  8. Vlydog, you're one of the most underrated members here. You're always coming up with great ideas and comments like these. Thanks! :)

As for me, other than WATCHES, of course. ;)

    Books

    Movies

    Travelling

    Militaria

    Clothes

Sport (esp. soccer, tennis, golf as both particiant and spectator)

    Fin de Si

  9. I never would've expected to get such a negative response from family and friends over this hobby.

My girlfriend hates hearing about the watches. With a grand total of 3 watches + one more planned for my birthday next month, is it really that extreme? She also is of the opinion that she is owed a piece of jewlery now. Maybe so.

Wow, this thread is very enlightening, and thank you so much for posting it, P4GTR.

My thoughts are spinning as I want to respond in a waterfall of words. Here are some observations:

    1) I am one of the lucky ones.

My mother loves watches, my father likes my collecting habits (he thinks it as an investment), and my boyfriend is patient and generous about anything I do. So, though I possibly bore people with my latest OCD hobby, by no means are they unsupportive. Am I blessed or what?

    2) Ever read "For Sale" threads when a guy starts off with something like, "Well, I want to buy another watch, but have 4 already, and the wife is only allowing me to keep 4, so this one must go"?

I literally go WHAT THE F---! No way, really? REALLY??

I've read DOZENS of posts like that. Yeah, maybe they're fibbing, but there are enough stories on rep forums about wives putting their foot down about more watches, so it's gotta be true sometimes.

How can certain women be like this? I would indulge the HECK out of my husband. I would pamper him, love him, and make sure any little innocent passion of his was encouraged -- be it sports, be it cars, be it watches.

Chances are most of the guys in this forum are not dead-beat dads. They're not spending money wantonly on booze, and whores. I bet you anything 90% of you are excellent providers, who at least try your best to keep your wife, children clothed, fed and sheltered.

Jesus Christ, and then a wife has the temerity to insist "NO more watches!"??

    That's awful.

    3) Look our mutual passion has a touch of the geekiness about it. But worse than that, it's expensive. Maybe gen watch forums think we're poor, because we can't afford the real money to buy gens -- maybe they're right sometimes.

But I've noticed most people in this forum are doing mighty well financially. The ones who aren't, are still not starving, and God willing, they will see better days.

I get being bored by our passion, but not the jealousy.

Being surrounded by a lot of people who support me, I will also tell you that my watch collection makes my neighbours both envious and competitive.

This I too don't get. Ah well.

  10. See, guys? This is the way to get someone to show you their goods.

So next time you're wanting to see a woman's rack, just tell her a little bird told you she's got mosquito bites for boobs. SUCKAZZ!!

P.S.: Just messin' witchu, TWP. Take all the time you need, my prince. ;)

    P.P.S.: Australia rocks.

  11. My father found a Rolex laying on a sandy beach just outside of San Diego.

MY MOTHER TOO! Well, change beach to telephone booth and San Diego to Copenhagen, but it's the same story. ;)

He reported it and placed an ad in the local paper, but it was never claimed.

He had it serviced and has been wearing it for the last 20 years.

We went to the police (very nice, Danish police) and they held it for 3 months, if memory serves. No one claimed it, so she kept it! I will ask her if I can take a photo of the SOLID GOLD Rollie...but I've made a pact with my parents. No gens in wrist-checks, etc. I've made one or two exceptions without you guys noticing, but this is her watch, so we'll see.

What model was your dad's found Rolex, do you know? :)

  12. Yes V the pics please..ante up...I will throw in your completely modded 005 for a nice frontal shot without clothes but lingerie would work  and hell ryyannon I might just send you something in the mail for having the balls to ask, in a funny way of course.

    Where's my 005, beeatch!

Aslo mate. I have never felt better than anyone or have ever felt that America is better than other countries. Actually, I would say that America ranks the lowest and least desirable place to live amongst the other civilized nations.

I've lived in 4 continents in 11 nations, travelled to more places than people could visit in 3 lifetimes (including Cuba) and the US of A is the only place in the world I'd care to raise a family -- save England, of course, but I'm partial to cream teas.

I never played those games because when your packing 2 inches like me :o you would loose everytime.

    :o

    The Irish Curse strikes again.

  13. Sometimes, it's even intentional.

    (see? humour, again)

Speaking of humour, it is often said the Irish not only taught the English how to speak the English launguage correctly, but to be funny whilst they're at it.

"A true gentleman is one who is never unintentionally rude" - Oscar Wilde

I wonder what old Oscar would make of this entire thread. Probably call over Bosey to snigger at us all.

  14. For one intent on bringing as much humour to the forum as possible, you're remarkably adept at missing it.

Ryyannon not only pokes fun at life, at others, at the whole crazy world we live in, to his inestimable credit, he also pokes fun at himself.

That is something many a Brit, we who pride ourselves about being so self-deprecating, could certainly learn a thing or two from.

  15. Switzerland and Canada all have guns and I never saw them cited in this debate.

Switzerland has a reputation for being rather dull, boring, and safe. Canada is cited by many people as a social paradise because their politics are a little closer to what they offer, as opposed to the USA.

Nothing wrong with either, but it goes to explaining a lot about the pass they get, even without this "trumpeting" issue heard below.

That's a good place to break out the plastic Timex.

In Rio de Janeiro, and S

  16. Are we finally going to see a little frontal nudity, Miss Barrett?

    What a horndog!

By the way, I was amused/horrified yesterday when I got my first vaguely male creep PM at another watch forum (thankfully). It read:

    "Hello

I take it your a female."

Note the spelling, and abrupt, rather chilling question about gender. I sniffed, and deleted. ;)

What a freak-show: people posting heavy artillery, others saying they can 'get by' with box-cutters and gutting-knives - all of them convinced that they are somehow culturally superior to the next guy.

    Yeppers.

And everyone dead serious about their position.

Well, you know...we in the West more or less have most problems solved. We have democracy. We have universal suffrage. We have relative amounts of freedom, and safety that other peoples would kill for.

I really don't see too many hot button issues within OUR OWN to keep us going.

America-cultural bashing is pretty much it for many.

    Bring on the pics, Vicky....

I was young. I needed the money.

  17. You missed my point. It is the Americans here on this forum that keep telling me they need guns to protect their families. I'm merely acknowledging this and trying to move on.

Not really, Pugwash. You're not the worst exemplar of this, but a lot of people in this forum really really dislike Americans having access to handguns.

They are condenscending to a degree that is all too common when talking of anything USA: a mixture of "European" cultural superiority (read, more civilised), pity, and horror, that has reached fever pitch levels since 2001 and Katrina.

In turn, this makes Americans defensive, but given their cultural nature, their best defence is offence.

They in this thread and others, including I, are trying to explain the reasons WHY SOME Americans own handguns, find nothing wrong in doing so, and in fact, rather enjoy it, like many people enjoying buying counterfeit watches.

They are also pointing out that the previous non-violent paradise many people have in the Old Continent is fast disappearing, to your well-being.

In turn, it seems that there is zero real understanding from certain people of why this is so, which strikes many Americans as bigotted bias.

The equivalent is something like this:

Marijuana usage is legal, or at least tolerated in many countries. It isn't in the USA.

Some people like this, some don't, on both sides.

But can you imagine if almost every European forum member felt his culture being attacked by Americans, because they can legally own this psychotropic substance?

Can you imagine how people would feel if they threw statistics in their face at every turn, inferring everything from degeneracy to complete incomprehensibility about this cultural "quirk"?

Part of this phenomenon is about jealousy. Part of this phenomenon is about bias. Part of this phenomenon is about horror.

And there is no end in sight about the judgemental, insidiously dismissive tone some people use about Americans about this, or any other topic where Americans are seen as bucking the world trend.

It's a shame, because I think we all of us have a lot to learn about each other, without these mutual biases interrupting our dialogue.

Won't someone please rise above the bias, and defensiveness, and just listen to each other without insults?

P.S.: I'll be back to this thread shortly. Boy have I got a humdinger of a photograph for you guys. WAIT FOR IT! ;)
