  1. "No pain, no gain and no watches"? That has to be the cheesiest tagline I've read to date. Let's randomly take a popular saying in English and then add a non-sequitur.

"Don't believe the hype... and watches"

"It's the pot calling the kettle black... and watches"

"It's my way or the highway... and watches"

I don't often use this abbreviation, but...LMAO! Hilarious, Kollektor. Reminds me that someone told me there is a custom with Chinese fortune cookies. You add "in bed" at the end of whatever nugget of wisdom you get. The other day, I ordered cantonese and got this:

A thrilling time is in your immediate future...in bed.

    Woo!

  2. I've been thinking about buying a new gen and I came upon this website that sells what they proport to be gen watches at a big discount. I'm thinking about buying either a Breitling Super Ocean, an Omega Planet Ocean or an Omega Constellation. This site has all of those watches at serious discounts. Any input on which watch to buy would also be welcome.

I've never been able to make a link work so I'll just paste in the site.

I'm going to give you another link, which you can use as a compare-contrast reference guide.

PLEASE use it at your own discretion, but I've bought gens from them, and have no complaints so far.

They don't even charge your credit card if they don't have the watch in stock at that very moment, which sometimes can take a few days to get. Emails are so-so, but delivery is very prompt (1 week tops, in my experience, priority shipping @ no charge), and they do have a customer service number.

  3. No photos yet, but I do have some potentially discouraging news. Put my 063 on the wife last night and it was borderline ridiculous. The case and lugs practically overshot her wrists so that the strap could hardly be seen when looking straight down at the dial. Now I'm used to seeing large watches on people, so all looked relatively normal to me, but I think that others may have a different perception. Wife thought it to be on the ridiculous side. :-(

Ay. What have I done? Straps already bought, too...maybe a dozen. :(

Oh well, I'm looking on the bright side until I actually get it on my hand. Failing all else, I can pay for my new hobby as a clown in kid's parties.

  4. LOL it will be a long ride for me all the way from germay with Mrs FxrAndy chasing me on her harley :bicycle::cc_scooter:

Pros: My mother is German, so I'm in like Flynn conversationally; I get along just great with wives.

Cons: I hate motorcycles. Also, my boyfriend is a hot-tempered Italian.

I think we best stick to flirtation on forums, and the like. *g*

  5. If I remember correctly, u reported the problem on Friday ur time, unfortunately,

    Hey, Jay. :)

(Just sent you a reply email, which I answered before seeing this)

Yes, I emailed you THE SECOND we got the watch, because I literally opened the package, took out the Daytona, put it on the towel, took out the AP RO...which then fell apart in my hands. The link was already broken. No pins or anything were noticeable inside the bag, or on the towel, as I noted above.

we did not picked up ur email until late Saturday my time, I went hiking on Sat. But I replied right away when I read it, and we communicated back and forth with some pics, and we promised to send u a replacement strap today. Is that what has happened? And today, a good customer of mine brought this post to my attention, and I loged on immediately to address this complaint. Hope u do not think this is suspicious 2. I appreciate u bought watches from us, and we will do the best to make u happy with ur puchase. That's what we do.

As I just mentioned in my email to you, I am grateful you are a serious rep dealer. I can vouch for the fact that though I did send off 3 emails to you Fri-Sun my time, you did eventually respond in good time, and with a professional solution.

Also, please note that though I was having "problems" with your reps, I did link THREE times to your watchsilix.com, when members requested a lower-priced rep site of confidence.

I wouldn't have done that without knowing you are a reputable dealer, confirmed by others in this, and other threads.

All will be well, I am sure!

  6. I disagree. Many of the people on this forum (I have noted) collect both gens and reps. We are into watches. Just a fun and very cool hobby. (Unfortunately a ridiculously expensive little hobby but I'm getting off topic...)

So, what I believe you are saying is that EVEN though we collect reps (and yes, also gens; count me in, our family have at least 10-15 of them), we're still into a hobby which requires some purchasing power...hence, perceived or actual lower-incomed people would not be present as much here? Hmm, maybe.

Nanug made an important point, that it may well be a cultural angle. If I had gone into a swimming forum, I might just have asked the same question, only I wouldn't have because societially, we're not used to seeing many black kids in say, Olympic swim teams. But rep watches? That I didn't think applied.

    P.S.: Thanks, Nanug! :)

  7. Well, it's your money, but, as mentioned, those dealers all use the same supplier. You'd be getting the same one from any of them (including the dealer I mentioned, who would get it at about a 10th of the price) Also, as mentioned, the gen watch does not have AR coating... Best of luck with your purchase :)

We still haven't bought it, and all suggestions are STILL being considered though I am partial to Andrew, as stated. :)

But if that is the case, that all of our rep dealers get it fromt he same source, why is it that there is such disparity in the photos and descriptions of watches, not to mention when you actually get two identical watches -- same movement, etc. -- from two dealers, which are COMPLETELY different? It already happened.

If you look at all the examples of this 007 watch, the colour of the bezel is such deeper with Andrew's shots, but it's more than that, it's deployant buckle etc.

To me, this suggests that it's not all the same supplier, but hey, what do I know. :)

  8. King Farouk was not only King of Egypt and one of the world's wealthiest men and a collector of many fine things, but he was also a well known kleptomaniac and a very talented pick pocket. During his lifetime his countrymen gave him the nick name of "the Thief of Cairo." Once at a state dinner, he stole Winston Churchill's beloved Brequet pocketwatch. By the time Churchill realized the watch was missing, Farouk had already retired for the evening. When one of the king's aides heard about the theft, he went to Farouk's bedroom, retrieved the watch, returned it to Churchill and blamed a busboy. I wonder how Farouk got this cool VC.

I was JUST about to post this very point. Mind you, Queen Mary -- the present queen's grandma -- also had the odd reputation of being a klepto, but not in the sense that she would actually pilfer stuff (including ormolu clocks, by the way), but because she would stay in front of a piece she wanted until she was given it, or was allowed to purchase it dead cheap. So, who knows.

King Farouk is a very scuzzy historical character (he once tried to seduce/rape Queen Frederika of Greece when King Paul was in the next room!), but one who was an horologist-extraordinaire. I saw his watch collection in a museum in Cairo, when I was a kid. Maybe an Egyptian member can remember the name of said museum. :)

  9. I am happy you feel that way but I do know we have scared other females off in the past with rather off-color posts appearing in the off-topic thread.

Ahh, I see. I rarely go to the OT in this or any other forum that I've frequented. In fact, I hate doing so because of the political angles which tend to sour a lot of potential relationships, in this day and age.

I'm fairly comfortable dealing with men, and I am not a feminazi in the sense of being outraged if guys post stuff about boobs, sex, or anything remotely drool-centric like that. I wouldn't like to think it stopped just because we were around!

Anyway, I got a mouth. If I don't like something I'll pipe up, rather than scoot out of here in terror. :)

P.S.: To make this post a little on-topic, just to mention that I have noticed here in Miami at least, a lot of black people wearing Rolexes, which was not the case even 10 years ago. So they are buying them, just maybe haven't found our forums yet. Look at me, I didn't until a fortnight ago when my boyfriend pointed it out!

  10. Many people have thought I was black at one time or another with all my bling. Really just a nice Jewish boy from Long Island :thumbsupsmileyanim:

    Us whiteys got style too.

The fact is that in the US African Americans only make up 18% of the population. You won't see much of that small of a minority on any forum really.

Heh, first, loved the diddy. But your stat doesn't make sense. Aren't there 14-20 million Jewish people around the world, TOTAL? :)

By that reckoning there should be very few, if any Jewish posters here and I'll bet you there are plenty!

Why? Maybe because of the perceived affluence Jewish people have...ah, I think I just answered my own question (or maybe not!, since reps are WAY cheaper than real ones, wouldn't it follow that perceived lower incomed people would flock to these forums?).

  11. It is a good point. Equally interesting and disappointing is the lack of female participation. Based on some of the postings, this is just not a female-friendly site and that really is too bad.

I can't speak for anyone but myself (because my ventriloquist dummy is at the cleaners), but I've never felt or been made to feel the least uncomfortable here because I'm a woman. Much on the contrary, I would say.

Now, if by that you meant that since there is a lack of women posting here, this forum might be female-friendly, I would say that's just the nature of the business, I guess. It's like a soccer forum.

Or a lack of males in a rep handbag forum. :)

    "Female-unfriendly" that is.

  12. I hear you. Someone here (or possibly on the other forums) posted a photo of his girlfriend wearing a Panny. It looked fantastic on her. Don't know what wrist size she was, however. But don't forget, there are models that are smaller than 44mm which may be right up your alley.

If you would like a wrist shot of the Better Half wearing one of my Pams, just say the word...

I think I know the one to which you refer, actually! Was it the PAM Purdey Lion, against the background of a Polish girl's thighs? ;)

You won't believe this, but it was that very sequence of photos that made me say, okay, she's wearing a PAM, it's huge, and she and I are rather similar physically. How bad can I look? Famous last words, maybe...

Kollektor, sure! Please post those photos if you can. :)

  13. Since the fortnight that I become more than a lurker here, which also is the case in other rep forums, I've noticed one thing that is glaringly obvious.

Almost 100% of the 'wrist check' shots and the like, are all from us whiteys, or at least, non-African-Americans, etc.

Are black members in rep forums that scarce?

It doesn't matter one bit what colour one is, but it's curious, yes? -- and perhaps the tiniest bit discomfitting that we're so vanilla. :)

Ack! Perhaps this isn't for the General Discussion area, but for OT. Sorry, admins. Please adjust the thread if necessary. :(

  14. Laz, if you can get over my weak photography skills, here are some wrist shots to put things into perspective. Wife has 6" wrist. The DJ is stunning in real life; the photos don't do it justice. Anyway, should give you some idea of the size. Let us know what you get!

Ack, this reminds me that since starting to post on this forum, I've bought two PAMs on which I am still awaiting delivery. And your wife's wrist is larger than mine (5.7").

With this side-by-side shot, it brought home to me the fact that I might look like I'm wearing a clown watch...but the Pannie fever was too strong!!

  15. I would get her the Rlx Exp, traditional classic look but still hip. Its the next on my hit parade. I wear a genuine Roadster and a rep J12. I have looked at all the ladies Rlx reps and the problem is the date font is wrong. Get her the trad. explorer, she will love it. Have it serviced and waterproofed and you can forget about any problems, it will be almost bulletproof.

    Ooh, another lady poster. :)

My mum just pulled the trigger with Josh for the large-size Tankissime in YG (another very hot watch if one is into Cartiers, which I'm not, alas). It's practically indistinguishable from the original, save for the cabochon not being the usual blue, but in crystal. Ah well, can't complain for a Benjamin.

  16. Unfortunately, you're a few years to late. The first batch of the 007 models were unbelievable. I think the models that josh/andrew/paul carry are identical. I think Silix may be a little different.

Here's the 'Original' to compare to:

    274785-2717.jpg

    good luck with the quest.

That's the very one, TeeJay. Thanks Marrickvilleboy!

We've decided that the slightly larger 42.5mm Andrew version with Swiss ETA, and upgraded features (slight AR, as I mentioned), will be the one bought. I owe Andrew my custom after he came through with me, big time. :)

  17. I'm diggin' the man purse :g:

Wish I could find a link, but in a recent visit down here to South Florida, he was wearing a string of pearls around his neck...

And to make the post topical, another schnazzy-awful watch, which however I would've loved to have known the marque of.

  18. The gen 2531.80 SMP does not have AR coating. The 2554.50 has single sided (inside surface) AR coating, the Planet Ocean has double-sided AR coating (and some folks complain that the outer layer can rub away, spoiling the appearance) but the 2531.80 SMP doesn't have it. The 2531.80 was the watch Pierce Brosnan wore from Tomorrow Never Dies onwards. In GoldenEye, he wore the 2541.80, which has a quartz rather than an automatic movement. The two watches are virtually identical, but, the 2541.80 has a larger luminous marker at 3, and the date window is slightly further than the crown. Also, I don't think the 2541.80 has the word 'chronometer' on the dial, but I'm not 100% sure on that. All that said, I don't think there are any dealers who stock the quartz version...

Thanks for this comprehensive reply, TeeJay!

This is my newbiehood talking, but he is only interested in the new Omega with the "007" in recess (not the 007 swirl one, by the way), in the dial, as I pictured in each of the examples. I had assumed this was a limited marking for tied with the new Bond in Casino Royale, and not a continuing version that Brosnan had worn.

    Was I wrong?

Still happy to receive any more info from you guys, before pulling the trigger to buy this watch. :)
