  1. Exactly so with me. When I got my first Panerai watch with a datewheel, I thought, my word, they wouldn't even spoil its sleek lines with an unsightly bump. Italians think of every detail. ;)

Absolutely so :) Okay, a datewheel might be a feature I can do without, but, the good folks at OP dealt with it in as unobtrosive manner as possible B)

  2. Funny, but I avoided buying the 029 specifically because of the numerals on the bezel. On the 063 the 24 hour indicators are fairly small numerals on the outside of the dial itself, and still retain a rather clean look. The only extraneous element that mars the 063, in my opinion, is the cyclops. I do, however, like the tuxedo dial on the 029, and that is an extraneous design element, although an extremely attractive one.

For me, it was the other way round, in that I think the numerals on the dial (even if small) still add to the 'clutter' (and the larger GMT hands definitely do) I don't normally like a cyclops on a watch, as I don't like them being a raised detail on the crystal, although with PAMs, they locate it internally, so it's not an aesthetic problem. I admit, I still don't like having to alter a date wheel, but, purely in terms of cyclops positioning, I can't really fault Panerai's design choice (absolutely spot on, as with all things Italian :D ) I'd originaly ordered the 029a as a gift, but it was the detail of the dial, which very quickly won me over, and made me decide to keep it for myself ^_^

  3. hi all.

so....ive had a couple of vip mariners laying about. i just could not bring myself to wear them....guess i'm not a rolex guy..and they were pretty flawed.

awhile ago i saw a seiko monster someone had bead blasted on a military watch forum ....it looked great...really tough. and since i have a sandblast cabinet..and these subs i'm never gonna wear....all that was missinng was a little free time and boredom.

all the ingredients came together last night.

    here are the results.

    the sterile dial blasto mariner.

    face.jpg

i removed the rolex text from the dial with goo gone. did a pretty hack job of it....so im giong to search for a good sterile dial replacement.

then i tore the watch down to case with crown and back installed (crystal removed), and bezel assy. i then covered the dial opening with gaffers tape (duct tape would do) and into the blast cabinet.

i did not have any blasting bead media...so i just used al-ox. it is pretty aggressive so it only took about 30 seconds for the case..and 20 sec for the bezel.

a little cleaning...and assembly and viola........

i have another of these watches...the LV model...i think ill get some less agressive media and give it a go with that one as well.

    what do you think?

now i'm looking through all my watch boxes seeing what else i have that may get blasto.

It's not fair, I can only give one rating for the post, when that deserves a gold star, an artist, and a huge thumbs up. That's a freaking awesome piece of work, wear it well :)# :1a::thumbsupsmileyanim:

  4. LOL. Oh God, memories of an old boyfriend and his watching Sheep Dip Nine (whatever).

:o Sacrilage!!! DS-9 was my favorite of the series, and Sisko was my favorite of the captains, even though my earliest memory is of watching an episode of the original series...

There are some men who just would not look well without a beard, or a moustache. Clark Gable and Tom Selleck come immediately to mind. George V, in the beard category.

Definitely. There was an actor on The O.C who grew a beard over the course of a few episodes, and looked much better with it, than without it. I grew mine as I was sick of people thinking I was younger than I am, and getting IDd to get into bars

    Hehe.

It reminds me of another saying, coincidentally, by that same Trekkie ex-boyfriend, who when he went to Mexico came back saying:

"EVERYONE has a big black moustache. Everyone. Men, women, children, dogs, refrigerators."

Hee hee, I like that

  5. Mr. Kent, where's the pic with the all black PVD PAM you promised? ;)

Happy Thanksgiving if you celebrate it! If not Happy Day, hahaha.

That is it  The watch came on a rubber dive strap, and has a PVD buckle, but it doesn't have a PVD bracelet (I'm not sure if such a thing even exists  )

Not a holiday I celebrate, but it's been a good one thus far :)

  6. Some men shouldn't wear beards. He looks like Billy Connolly...and look at the Nixon watch worn by the autograph hunter chick.

I was thinking Commander Riker after several years in a Cardassian gulag (Trek Reference for non-sci-fi buffs)

As for your comment about beards, indeed, Mr Brosnan certainly looks better clean shaven, although, there are a couple of good sayings...

"There are two kinds of people in this world that go around beardless

  7. Thanks flamemax, that was very helpful. This is my first Panerai, and I have to say it has made quite an impression on me. Do any Pam experts here know how accurate it is in terms of looks? Also, is the movment a good one?

**EDIT - How many times do I have to full turn the crown to fully wind it, and how long does the watch remain wound? Does winding have to be done on a daily basis?

In term of accuracy, I'm sure that the PAM experts will point out several minute details, however, bear in mind that the majority of the public have never even heard of this watch, let alone know what the details should be.

In terms of winding, it should take about fourty winds, from completely stopped, to fully wind the watch, and that should keep going for about 48 hours. By choice, I wind my PAMs at midnight every day, just so I know that it's always fully wound :)

  8. I enjoyed Transformer for the great watch sightings. :p So far, though, we've spoken of subdials and chronos, etc.

Are you sure we're thinking of the same movie(s) I'm thinking of the movies with Jason Statham, where he was wearing a PAM Chrono (and from his comments on the DVD commentary, it sounded like it was his own personal property, rather than one provided by the costume department), not Transformers, with the lovely Megan Fox

    How about the printing?

Indeed, on Submariner's (and to a degree, Seamasters), all the 'blurb' can be cluttering and unneccesary. I'd even say that Marina Militare Luminor Panerai looks cluttered compared to Luminor Panerai

That can really clutter up a lot of the watches. OTOH, I love me some Pateks, but this is just TOO plain.

Plain is good, after all, a 112h has hardly any printing, and, even a 'sterile' 112h would look nice, I think the problem with that watch is that rather than being 'plain', the hands, indices and dial are so slim they rather 'blend in' at a casual glance...

  9. When I was younger, I used to really like multi-dial watches (corrupted by the Seiko in Octopussy) However, as I got older, I realized that a lot of the functions on such watches, I never used, so getting such a watch was pretty pointless. Now, I like my watches to be as uncomplicated as possible (probably why I like PAMs so much) Things like GMT can make the watch too busy, it depends how it is handled. For example. The 029a. Barely visible GMT indicator hand (some might not like it, wanting something more visible, but, I personally find it a bit like a butler:Invisible untill required) The 24hr scale is on the bezel, rather than being on the dial face, so not actually cluttering the dial. However, there are GMT PAMs with the 24hr scale on the dial and a GMT hand which is as visible as the primary hands, which, altogether, (I feel) combine to clutter the dial. I only used the GMT as an example, as it's something I would wear more when the function will be used, rather than just wearing it (although every now and again, I do think, "Damn that's a nice watch, I'm wearing that today!" ) Bearing that in mind, I have little use for a watch with chrono functions (although I want to get the chrono PAM worn in The Transporter for my movie collection) so would likely not wear one very often anymore. :)

  10. yea... I'm aware of that... UPO is just for the "rep world"

I send an email to Ruby & she said that her 45.5mm PO is the same as Andrew's & Josh's...

people are telling me different things...

    "analysis paralysis" I'm confused

To be precice, UPO is just sold by Andrew or Josh (I really can't remember which) If you really want a UPO, they're who you have to go to. There are, however, dealers with equally nice Planet Oceans. None of them are 1:1 perfect to the real thing, so whatever you buy will have some flaw. The trick, is to pick the one with the flaw you can live with (or modify) :)

  11. r u saying that Silix's crystal doesn't have AR coating???

what about the SS bracelet, is it as good as Josh's???

I'm in Australia... where would I get the tube & crown replaced with the gen???

this will be my first rep...

I have no idea where to get it serviced in Australia when it's necessary

& why isn't Silix's classified as an UPO???

The only watch classified as a UPO is the one sold by Andrew or Josh (I forget which). The watches sold by Silix (and other dealers) are simply classed as Planet Oceans. They do not have the U(ltimate) prefix. The real thing, is the Planet Ocean Big Size, model number 2901.50.91. If you go into an AD and ask to see a You Pee Oh, they'll probably either look at you like you've got two heads, or laugh their ass off.

If you want to get a rep watch serviced, then there are a number of modders on the forum who are renouned for the quality of their work. If you want to get the work done locally to you, then your best bet is to try a small, independant jewellers, and ask if they do watch repairs.

Best of luck with your purchase :)

  12. Just got my upo 21j movement for 140.00 with delivery from trusty watch guy , good service i can see if ispend the extra 100.00 on the eta movememt but thought i would try a differnt seller.

That's the rotor spinning. Nothing to worry about, it's when you can't feel it rotating that you need to worry ;)

  13. Here's mine... Can you guess where it is :-)

"Put your hands up for Brighton... I LOVE this City!"

Fantastic place, I haven't been in a few years, which is a shame, as I know my fiance would love it. I heard a rumor that they re-modeled Smugglers so it's no longer 'pirate themed' and now just another soulless wine bar... :o

Oh, here's some pics of where I've lived...

  14. Actually, I have a bit of a pictorial.... Sorry TTK ;) Just try to grin and bear it.,.. we aren't ALL criminals and paupers ;)

The pain was bearable (obviously), although definitely much different from the even feeling pressure of a gun. After a while, the pain turns to numb. This has healed perfectly, and 3 years later, the lines are still extremely sharp.

This yant was created by a monk in Northern Thailand, Chiang Rai district, for me alone... They are written in ancient Khmer script and the language used is Pali.

The artist is a great guy from Chiang Rai City.... the work I've seen from him is amazing!

It was created to protect me from all sorts of bad things... and to give me good luck in all sorts of good things... so far so good...

That's absolutely fantastic, thanks for sharing the experience :) Would I be correct in thinking that every detail, including lines, was done by single presses of the implement? (looks like sharpened bamboo)
